What it does
PATCHFORGE AI is an AI-powered autonomous software engineering agent designed to simplify software debugging and development. Powered by NVIDIA Nemotron and Nebius AI infrastructure, it analyzes repository issues, identifies potential root causes, generates code patches, executes tests in an isolated environment, and attempts to repair failures. It provides transparent execution logs, code diffs, and test reports, keeping developers in control through human approval before changes are accepted.
How we built it
We designed PATCHFORGE AI around an agentic workflow that combines AI reasoning with controlled software engineering tools. The planned stack includes NVIDIA Nemotron for code analysis and decision-making, Nebius Token Factory for model inference, Python and FastAPI for backend orchestration, and React with TypeScript for the user interface. Repository analysis, patch validation, automated testing, and bounded repair attempts form the core workflow. Security measures include credential protection, restricted execution, and human-reviewed code changes.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was designing an agent that does more than generate plausible code—it must verify whether its proposed fixes actually work. Other challenges include handling complex repositories, interpreting test failures, preventing unsafe code execution, managing model inference costs, and protecting API credentials. Ensuring that every reported result is backed by actual execution evidence is a key engineering priority.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We developed a clear vision for transforming AI-assisted coding into a structured, verifiable software engineering workflow. PATCHFORGE AI brings issue analysis, patch generation, test execution, bounded self-repair, and human review into one unified experience. We are particularly proud of prioritizing transparency and developer control rather than treating AI-generated code as automatically correct.
What we learned
Building an agentic coding system requires more than integrating a powerful language model. Reliable tool orchestration, structured outputs, isolated execution, automated tests, error handling, and human oversight are equally important. We also learned that AI-generated solutions should be evaluated using real test results and reproducible evidence instead of relying solely on the model's confidence.
What's next for PATCHFORGE AI
Our next steps are to complete the end-to-end implementation, validate NVIDIA Nemotron integration through Nebius, and demonstrate automated bug fixing on real, controlled repositories. We plan to improve multi-language support, repository understanding, sandbox security, and repair accuracy. Future versions may include GitHub issue integration, pull-request generation with explicit approval, team collaboration, and continuous integration support—all while keeping developers in control of important decisions.
