Inspiration In Malawi, smallholder farmers feed the nation, yet many lose a large portion of their harvests because of preventable crop diseases, unpredictable weather, and limited access to expert advice. Most farmers rely on delayed extension services or guesswork, which leads to lower yields and reduced income. We were inspired to create a simple, digital solution that brings modern tools directly to farmers, helping them make smarter and faster decisions about their crops.
What it does Cropia is a mobile application that empowers Malawian farmers through early disease detection, real-time weather alerts, AI-driven guidance, and community collaboration. Using a smartphone camera, farmers can capture images of their crops, and the app identifies possible diseases while recommending treatments. It also provides localized weather updates, an AgriBot assistant for farming advice, and a community platform where farmers can share outbreak reports and experiences. Together, these features help improve productivity and strengthen resilience.
How we built it We built Cropia using Flutter for mobile development and Firebase or Supabase for backend services such as authentication, database management, and notifications. Our team trained the AI model using sample crop-disease datasets, and we developed a chatbot powered by natural language processing to answer farmers’ questions. We designed and tested our user interface in Figma to make sure it is simple and intuitive, even for first-time smartphone users. The development process followed an agile approach with continuous testing and feedback.
Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges was achieving accurate crop-disease detection using limited local data. We also faced difficulties creating an interface that farmers could easily understand while keeping it functional and modern. Network connectivity was another issue, so we had to design the app to work efficiently even in rural areas with poor internet coverage. Balancing performance, security, and simplicity was a learning process throughout development.
Accomplishments that we are proud of We managed to build a working AI prototype that detects major crop diseases and a functional design for Android and iOS. We created a modular backend that supports real-time updates and notifications and developed a farmer community space for collaboration. Most importantly, we proved that digital tools can directly improve agricultural decision-making and productivity in Malawi.
What we learned We learned how important it is to design with real users in mind and to keep technology simple enough for anyone to use. We also gained practical experience in integrating AI with mobile development and cloud systems. Through this project, we understood that technology has real value only when it solves real human problems and makes life easier for people on the ground.
What’s next for Cropia Next, we plan to add digital identity integration so that verified farmers can securely access personalized recommendations and government support programs. We also aim to improve the AI model using local datasets and pilot the app with smallholder farmers across Malawi. Future updates will include offline detection, market price information, and connections with agricultural extension services. Our long-term goal is to make Cropia a trusted digital companion for every farmer, helping build a stronger and more resilient agricultural sector in Malawi.
