AgriSense was inspired by the challenges faced by small and medium-sized farmers in Pakistan, where guesswork, unpredictable weather, and poor soil management often lead to low yields and wasted resources. Field visits revealed the urgent need for a low-cost, scalable, and easy-to-use solution that bridges traditional farming with modern, data-driven practices. AgriSense is a smart agriculture platform combining IoT, AI, cloud processing, and a mobile app to enable precision farming. It monitors soil and environmental conditions in real time and delivers actionable insights like daily tasks, irrigation schedules, and disease detection through an intuitive, multilingual interface. The system uses an ESP32 microcontroller with a 7-in-1 NPK sensor suite, powered by solar energy for field autonomy. Data is sent via LoRaWAN to a Microsoft Azure backend with NestJS and PostgreSQL, where AI models process it for recommendations. A React Native mobile app displays results offline in a farmer-friendly format. We faced hurdles in establishing stable communication between RS485 sensors and ESP32, calibrating sensors for accuracy, and managing separate power supplies. Designing a simple, clear UI for farmers with limited digital literacy was another significant challenge. We successfully built a complete IoT-powered farming solution, tested it in the field, and received strong farmer feedback. AgriSense earned recognition at national events, winning awards for innovation and real-world impact. We gained expertise in IoT integration, AI model development, and cloud systems, while realizing the importance of user-centered design, trust-building, and local adaptation for successful adoption. We plan to add AI-driven predictive maintenance, integrate satellite and drone data, and enhance offline capabilities, aiming to scale AgriSense nationwide and across South Asia.
