Inspiration Our inspiration comes from the challenges faced by African farmers, who often endure long travel distances to reach markets and face exploitation from middlemen. AgriLink Africa aims to empower these farmers by connecting them directly with consumers. This direct link improves farmers' livelihoods, makes fresh, local produce more accessible to consumers, and addresses food waste in the supply chain. We believe in technology's potential to drive social change, creating a more sustainable and equitable food system across Africa.
What it Does AgriLink Africa is a mobile platform that:
Connects Farmers and Consumers Directly: Farmers can list produce for sale, and consumers can purchase directly through the app, eliminating the need for travel and middlemen. Reduces Food Waste: Tracks food movements in real-time, ensuring optimal transport and storage to minimize waste. Improves Agritech Supply Chain Efficiency: Facilitates smoother transactions between farmers and consumers, streamlining the supply chain. Provides Key Insights for Farmers: Weather Forecasts to help farmers plan their crops. Market Prices for transparency, allowing farmers to earn fair compensation. AI-powered Pest and Disease Detection for better crop management. Access to Financing by connecting farmers with lenders. How We Built It We used a combination of advanced technologies:
MongoDB Atlas and Google Cloud for secure, scalable data management and machine learning capabilities. React Native for a cross-platform mobile experience that supports both iOS and Android devices. Realm to provide offline functionality, crucial in areas with limited connectivity. MongoDB Atlas Search and Google Cloud NLP for quick, accurate searches. Generative AI to offer personalized recommendations and insights to users. Google Cloud Compute Engine for load balancing and scalable backend support. Challenges We Ran Into Resource Constraints: Limited MongoDB quota initially halted app functionality, but upgrading resolved these issues. Time Management: Balancing full-time jobs while developing the app was challenging. API Access: We couldn’t access Google’s Palm API initially, which delayed the implementation of advanced AI features, though we’re now on the waiting list. Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of Teamwork: Building a cohesive team that’s committed to future collaborations. Successful Launch: Despite tight timelines, we launched AgriLink Africa on the Google Play Store, marking a significant milestone. Skills Growth: Our team gained valuable skills in MongoDB Atlas, Google Cloud, and generative AI. What We Learned Technical Skills: We enhanced our understanding of MongoDB’s aggregation, Realm, and various Google Cloud tools. App Development Best Practices: Leveraged MongoDB’s App Services to create a reliable offline-capable mobile application. Team Collaboration: The importance of effective teamwork and time management in fast-paced, resource-limited environments. What’s Next for AgriLink Africa Expansion as Africa’s Leading Agro-Trading Platform: Continue developing AgriLink Africa as a premier marketplace linking farmers and buyers across the continent. Mobile Payment Integration: Introduce mobile payments to enable premium subscriptions for sustainable revenue. Enhanced NLP for Contextual Search: Integrate Google Cloud’s NLP to improve search relevance, delivering a tailored experience to each user.
