Inspiration

Across Africa, millions of smallholder farmers start their day before the sun rises. They work long hours in the fields—through extreme heat, unpredictable rains, and long days—to grow the food we all depend on. But many of them are still left out of modern farming tools and systems.

Most don’t have smartphones or internet access. But that doesn’t mean they’re behind. They’re eager to explore new ways of doing things, to grow smarter, and to improve—if only someone made it easier for them.

We kept hearing their voices. Not complaining, just honest. Hopeful. Tired, sometimes, but still full of pride. They weren’t asking for charity. Just someone to listen. Just a way to move forward, to do better for their land and their families.

And we asked ourselves:
Can we help farmers earn more and grow smarter using only the sky and their voice?

That question inspired AgriNova, a WhatsApp-first, AI conversational voice-enabled, satellite-powered carbon credit platform that transforms any basic mobile phone into a powerful tool for climate-smart income and crop guidance.

Because farmers are not just part of the system. They are the backbone. And they deserve to grow with the world, not be left behind.

Millions of smallholder farmers across Africa are excluded from modern agricultural services and financial systems. Most don't own smartphones or have internet access, but they’re ready to adopt sustainable practices if they can see the value.

What It Does

AgriNova lets rural farmers:

  • Register their farms with a simple voice call or WhatsApp messages.
  • Get crop health updates through satellite imagery
  • Enroll in carbon credit programs for sustainable farming
  • Receive payments and farming advice via voice and SMS

All of this is done without internet—just a regular phone and a toll-free WhatsApp number powered by AI.

Meanwhile, admins and agronomists can access real-time dashboards to monitor:

  • Wallet balances and token distributions
  • Farmer activity
  • Regional credit retirements
  • The verification pipeline

How We Built It

🎙 Voice AI

  • Built with ElevenLabs Conversational AI for natural, multilingual voice guidance
  • Supports conversations in English, Swahili, and French
  • Handles onboarding, crop diagnosis, carbon enrollment, and earnings reports

🛰 Satellite Integration

  • Integrated SentinelHub and PlanetScope APIs for NDVI, rainfall, and soil moisture data
  • Mapped real-time satellite insights to individual farmer fields
  • Translated complex data into clear, actionable advice delivered via voice

🌱 Carbon Credit Onboarding

  • Used Toucan Protocol on Polygon blockchain for wallet creation and TCO2 token tracking
  • Automated registry ID assignment and estimated credit potential per farm

  • Built with React + Bolt.js
  • Displays farmer activity, satellite metrics, wallet balances, and interaction logs in real time

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Building a natural voice experience for farmers unfamiliar with AI, voice menus, or automated systems
  • Handling patchy, low-resolution, or cloudy satellite imagery, and smoothing NDVI/weather data
  • Simplifying blockchain flows—from wallet creation to token tracking—without ever saying "crypto"
  • Creating multilingual UX with culturally aware and actionable voice prompts
  • Earning trust in a system powered by voice and satellite data in communities unfamiliar with digital finance
  • Making the experience feel human, especially during first-time interactions

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Designed and built a complete carbon credit system that works through WhatsApp and voice—no internet required
  • Delivered a working prototype within days for a complex Web3 and agri-tech use case
  • Made blockchain and AI tools accessible to farmers with no smartphones, limited literacy, and zero tech exposure

What We Learned

  • Voice builds trust faster than any screen—especially when it's local, clear, and human
  • When paired with WhatsApp, voice AI becomes a powerful tool even for first-time tech users
  • Farmers don’t need tech jargon—they need respectful conversations, practical advice, and real results
  • Simple language, cultural context, and patience go further than any fancy UI
  • Satellite data, voice guidance, and blockchain can come together to create real income for people excluded from the digital world
  • In the toughest environments, simple UX always wins
