Inspiration
Indonesia is one of the worlds largest agricultural producers, yet many fresh produce transactions still rely on fragmented communication through phone calls, messaging apps, and manually shared photo. Buyers often struggle to verify harvest quality, freshness, and availability before making procurement decisions, while distributors repeatedly provide the same information to different buyers. We realized that the problem is not simply about connecting farmers to buyers. The real bottleneck lies in the lack of standardized harvest information during the procuremenet process. Without reliable and transparant information, procurement becomes slower, less effieicnet, and increases the risk of post harvest quality degradation. The inspired us to build AgriConnect a platform that standardizes harvest information and helps procurement decisions become faster, more transparent, and more trustworthy.
What it does
AgriConnect is a mobile platform designed for agricultural distributors. It helps distributors manage harvest information and publish their products through a digital Harvest Passport. Instead of sending multiple photos and answering the same questions repeatedly, distributors simply upload harvest photos along with basic product information such as harvest date, price, stock, and minimum order quantity. AI then analyzes the harvest images and generates additional insights, including freshness estimation, visual grade, shelf-life estimation, and storage recommendations. Before the product is published, every Harvest Passport is reviewed and verified by the distributor. Buyers can then browse products from multiple distributors, compare standardized harvest information, and submit procurement requests directly through the platform. Our AI acts only as a decision support system. It helps generate insights, but every final decision remains under the distributor's control.
How we built it
We started by understanding how agricultural procurement works in Indonesia. After several discussions and research, we decided to focus on distributors because they are the main bridge between farmers and buyers. We designed the entire user experience in Figma, starting from harvest submission, AI analysis, Harvest Passport generation, product publishing, and buyer procurement flow. Google Gemini was used to simulate AI-powered harvest analysis and generate procurement insights based on uploaded harvest images. Rather than building a marketplace, we focused on improving how harvest information is documented, verified, and shared, making procurement faster without changing the existing supply chain.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was defining the right problem. At first, we explored ideas such as direct farmer-to-buyer marketplaces and bidding systems. However, after learning more about Indonesia's agricultural ecosystem, we realized that distributors already play an important role in aggregation, quality control, and logistics. Instead of replacing distributors, we shifted our focus toward improving the procurement process itself. Another challenge was deciding how AI should be used. We wanted AI to assist decision-making, not replace human judgment. That's why every Harvest Passport must still be verified by the distributor before being published.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we managed to build a solution that works with Indonesia's existing agricultural ecosystem instead of trying to replace it. One of our biggest achievements is introducing the concept of Harvest Passport, which transforms scattered harvest information into a standardized digital profile. We also successfully positioned AI as a practical decision support tool that helps distributors and buyers make better procurement decisions while keeping humans in control.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned that technology doesn't always have to disrupt an industry to create value. Sometimes, improving the flow of information can create a much bigger impact than changing the entire process. We also learned that AI is most valuable when it supports people instead of replacing them. Combining AI-generated insights with human verification creates a balance between efficiency and trust.
What's next for AgriConnect
Our next step is to continue developing AgriConnect into a complete procurement platform for Indonesia's agricultural industry. We plan to expand the buyer experience, integrate logistics and payment services, and develop a web dashboard for enterprise users. We also want to improve our AI capabilities by providing more accurate harvest analysis and procurement insights based on real transaction data. Our long-term vision is to make AgriConnect the standard platform for trusted agricultural procurement, helping distributors sell more efficiently while giving buyers greater confidence in every purchasing decision.
