AgriBuddy Project Outline

Inspiration

Agriculture is the lifeblood of many African economies, supporting over 60% of the population. In Kenya, smallholder farmers produce over 70% of the food supply, yet they face significant challenges: unpredictable weather, pests, volatile markets, and limited access to information. With up to 50% yield loss from pests and diseases, 40% post-harvest losses, and only 5% of farmers having regular access to agricultural experts, the need for a solution is urgent. AgriBuddy AI was inspired by this knowledge gap, aiming to empower farmers with AI-driven tools delivered in accessible formats—text-to-speech, videos, and native languages—using the fact that 90% of farmers have basic phone or internet access.

What it does

AgriBuddy AI is a mobile-friendly farming assistant that helps smallholder farmers make informed decisions. Its key features include:

  • Personalized Crop Recommendations: Suggests the best crops based on location, soil, and weather.
  • Market Trend Insights: Provides estimated crop prices across regions for smarter selling.
  • Step-by-Step Crop Plans: Offers week-by-week guidance on planting, pest control, and harvesting.
  • Voice and Video Tutorials: Delivers audio instructions and visual guides for complex tasks.
  • Native Language Support: Communicates in languages like Swahili and Amharic, ensuring inclusivity.
Designed for basic smartphones, it reaches the 90% of farmers with internet access.

How we built it

AgriBuddy AI was developed using Bolt.new, a no-code AI platform, for rapid prototyping:

  • AI Core: Machine learning analyzes weather, soil, and market data for tailored advice.
  • Interface: A simple, intuitive design with earthy tones and icons (🌱, 📊) was built using Bolt.new’s editor.
The app is hosted on Netlify for easy access.

Challenges we ran into

Development wasn’t without hurdles:

  • Time Limit: Unfortunately we found out about the Hackathon 2 days before submission so integrating real time data, delivering audio instructions and visual guides using Tavus weren't feasible.
  • User-Friendly Design: Simplifying the app for non-tech-savvy users took several iterations.
These obstacles tested our adaptability but sharpened our focus on the end user.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re thrilled with these milestones:

  • Fast MVP: Built a working app with AI features in under two days.
  • Accessibility: The design and basic features make it usable for a wide audience.
  • User Feedback: Early testers praised its simplicity and practical value.
  • Hackathon Fit: Met all requirements for the World’s Largest Hackathon, including Netlify deployment.

What we learned

This project taught us:

  • Accessibility Matters: Simple, digestible advice is key for farmers.
  • User Focus: Delivery and ease of use drive impact.
  • Empathy Drives Impact: Solving real problems starts with understanding users’ lives.
AI’s strength lies in meeting people where they are, not in complexity.

What's next for AgriBuddy

The future is bright, especially with features we couldn’t fully implement due to the tight two-day timeline after discovering the project. Next steps include:

  • Real-Time Data: Integrate live weather and market feeds to enhance accuracy.
  • AI-Generated Videos: Use Tavus to create visual tutorials for planting and pest control.
  • Text-to-Speech: Add Eleven Labs for natural voice narration in multiple languages.
  • Language Translation: Expand multi-language support with full translations using large language models.
  • Community Tools: Add features for farmers to connect and share knowledge.
  • Monetization: Offer premium features like advanced analytics.
  • Global Reach: Scale to other regions, starting in East Africa.
AgriBuddy AI aims to become the ultimate tool for smallholder farmers worldwide.
