Inspiration

Across West Africa, millions of smallholder farmers grow our food every day, yet most of them remain invisible in digital systems. Without formal identity or agricultural records, they are excluded from subsidies, microcredit, insurance, and public programs.

Agri-ID was inspired by this simple reality: farmers exist on the ground, but not in digital systems.

We wanted to use digital identity not just for identification, but as a tool for economic inclusion, ownership, and growth.

The Problem

Smallholder farmers face three major challenges:

  • Lack of official or usable digital identity
  • No formal agricultural history or records
  • Limited access to financial and public services

As a result:

  • Subsidies are inefficiently distributed
  • Fraud and duplicate beneficiaries exist
  • Farmers cannot access credit or insurance
  • Governments lack reliable agricultural data

Without identity, farmers cannot fully participate in the digital economy.

Our Solution: Agri-ID

Agri-ID is a farmer-owned digital agricultural identity built on MOSIP that enables smallholder farmers to securely access subsidies, credit, insurance, and public services.

Each farmer receives a unique digital identity linked to:

  • Basic identity information
  • Crops and land size
  • Seasonal production history
  • Inputs received (fertilizer, seeds)

Farmers control who accesses their data and can revoke permissions at any time.

Agri-ID works on smartphones and basic phones through USSD/SMS to ensure inclusion in low-connectivity rural areas.

How We Built It

Agri-ID uses the MOSIP sandbox as the core digital identity layer.

Technical stack:

  • MOSIP Sandbox for identity management
  • Backend API (Django / Node.js / SpringBoot)
  • Secure PostgreSQL database
  • OAuth2 for authentication and consent
  • Flutter mobile application for farmers
  • Web dashboard for agents and cooperatives
  • QR code for offline identity verification

Enrollment is done by agricultural agents or cooperatives using a phone and photo, with optional biometric verification.

The system is designed to be lightweight, interoperable, and scalable across African countries using MOSIP.

Data Privacy, Security & Digital Rights

Agri-ID follows privacy-by-design principles:

  • Farmers own their data
  • Explicit consent is required before sharing
  • End-to-end encryption
  • Minimal data collection
  • Compliance with local data protection laws and GDPR principles

No data is sold. No hidden tracking.

Impact

Social Impact:

  • Digital inclusion of rural farmers
  • Economic empowerment of women farmers
  • Reduced rural poverty

Economic Impact:

  • Better distribution of subsidies
  • Increased agricultural productivity
  • Reduced fraud and duplication

Institutional Impact:

  • Reliable agricultural data for planning
  • Transparent service delivery

Scalability & Sustainability

Agri-ID is designed to scale across West Africa using MOSIP infrastructure.

The platform can be extended to other sectors such as livestock, fisheries, health, and education.

Future sustainability includes partnerships with governments, cooperatives, banks, and insurance providers through API-based services.

Challenges

Key challenges included:

  • Designing for low-connectivity environments
  • Balancing usability with strong security
  • Ensuring inclusivity for non-smartphone users

These challenges guided our choice of USSD, QR codes, and lightweight architecture.

What We Learned

Digital identity becomes truly powerful when it is combined with real economic use cases.

By centering ownership on farmers and integrating financial and agricultural services, Agri-ID transforms identity into opportunity.
