Inspiration
Agriculture still depends heavily on manual monitoring and irrigation, which can lead to water waste, unnecessary labor, and delayed responses to changing field conditions. We wanted to build a system that could make farming more intelligent by allowing technology to sense conditions, make decisions, and take action automatically. This idea inspired us to create Agresental.
What it does
Agresental is an AI- and IoT-based smart agriculture system that monitors agricultural conditions and automates important tasks.
It uses soil-moisture sensing to determine when crops need water and automatically controls a water pump through a relay. It also incorporates rain detection, environmental/gas monitoring, camera-based observation, and alerts to provide a more complete view of the farming environment.
The goal is to reduce water wastage and manual effort while making agricultural monitoring more efficient and responsive.
How we built it
We built Agresental by combining microcontroller-based control, sensors, a relay module, a water pump, camera monitoring, and an alert system.
The soil-moisture sensor continuously measures the condition of the soil. When the moisture level falls below a predefined threshold, the controller activates the relay and turns on the water pump. Rain and environmental sensors provide additional information, while camera monitoring can help identify activity around the field.
The system was developed through hardware integration, programming, testing, and repeated calibration of sensor thresholds to make the automated responses more reliable.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was getting different sensors and hardware components to work reliably together. Sensor readings can fluctuate because of environmental conditions, so choosing appropriate thresholds and avoiding false triggers required repeated testing.
We also had to deal with limitations in hardware resources, power management, wiring, and integrating multiple monitoring functions into a single system while keeping the prototype practical and affordable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of successfully turning the concept into a working smart-agriculture prototype rather than keeping it as a theoretical idea.
The system can automatically detect low soil moisture and activate irrigation, while also incorporating additional environmental and visual monitoring features. Building these different functions into one integrated system demonstrated how relatively affordable electronics can be used to address real agricultural problems.
What we learned
Through Agresental, we learned that building a real-world technology project requires much more than writing code. We gained practical experience in electronics, sensors, microcontrollers, automation, troubleshooting, system integration, and hardware-software communication.
We also learned the importance of testing in real conditions, because sensor behavior in practice can be very different from what is expected theoretically.
What's next for Agresental
Our next goal is to make Agresental more intelligent and scalable. Future versions could include AI-based crop-health detection, plant disease identification, weather-data integration, mobile notifications, cloud-based monitoring, and predictive irrigation.
We also want to improve the system's energy efficiency, reliability, and scalability so that it can move beyond a prototype and become a practical solution for real agricultural environments.
