Inspiration In Togo, land can divide families and destroy lives. Seven out of ten court cases, 70% of all legal disputes, are about land. It’s devastating. Families spend their life savings, only to discover that the land they bought belongs to someone else. Some lose everything. Others lose their lives. We asked: why should owning land be a matter of survival? That question gave birth to Agnigban Gna.

What it does Agnigban Gna is a digital platform that makes land transactions safe, transparent, and accessible.

  • Anyone can check the status of a land plot for free—whether it’s available, disputed, or already sold.
  • Citizens can formally object to the issuance of a land title, a right that used to be hidden in obscure press notices.
  • Transactions that once took months can now be completed in just a few days. Three promises guide us: Transparency. Protection. Accessibility.

How we built it Building trust required more than technology—it required fieldwork and community engagement.

  • Our team conducts on-the-ground studies across cantons and villages to verify ownership and reduce disputes.
  • We cross-check official records from notaries, municipalities, and the cadastre with local knowledge.
  • Backend & Database: Supabase handles authentication, secure storage, and APIs.
  • Frontend: A clean, intuitive web and mobile app accessible from anywhere. Integration: Partnerships with local authorities ensure authenticity and legal compliance.

Challenges we faced

  • Harmonizing data across different authorities and communities.
  • Convincing people to trust a digital platform for such a sensitive issue.
  • Dealing with limited internet access in rural areas.
  • Combining traditional knowledge with official records in a way accepted by all parties.

What we’re proud of

  • Reducing double sales and disputes through verified, on-the-ground investigations.
  • Giving citizens the ability to know the true status of land ownership.
  • Cutting transaction times from months to days.
  • Bridging technology, tradition, and law in a trusted platform.

What we learned Preventing fraud requires listening to communities as much as integrating databases. Trust grows when technology, fieldwork, and partnerships come together. Supabase proved invaluable for secure, fast development and data management.

What’s next for Agnigban Gna We’re just getting started. Next, we will:

  • Expand our investigations and database to cover all of Togo.
  • Launch a mobile app to reach rural communities and the diaspora.
  • Strengthen partnerships with authorities, notaries, and traditional leaders.
  • Scale across West Africa, where land fraud is a common challenge.

Because no one should ever risk their life for a piece of land.
