Inspiration
As UC Davis students, we’ve all had that moment of panic after misplacing something on campus—keys, ID cards, even AirPods. We noticed that while people often post lost/found items on random platforms (like Snapchat), there's no centralized or student-specific system. That’s when the idea hit: what if there was a dedicated, streamlined platform just for Aggies to report and recover lost items? That's how AggieClaim was born.
What it does
AggieClaim is a platform which helps user to :
- Report a lost item with details and a photo
- Submit a found item for others to search
- Access a clean, intuitive interface designed for students
- Navigate easily using the SPA (Single Page Application) layout
How we built it
We took a dual approach for AggieClaims—focusing on both the development of a functional website and a prototype for the mobile experience.
💻 Website:
We built a fully functional, responsive website using HTML5, CSS3, and vanilla JavaScript. It features smooth page transitions using a Single Page Application (SPA) structure, styled with a clean UI inspired by UC Davis colors and branding. The platform includes lost & found item forms, a scrollable About section with testimonials, and a linked Team page—all coded from scratch with accessibility in mind.📱 Mobile App Prototype:
To extend the platform to mobile, we designed a high-fidelity prototype using Figma. The app concept mirrors the website experience but with a mobile-first UX in mind—featuring quick access buttons for submitting reports, a real-time claim feed, and a friendly onboarding process.
This combination allowed us to demonstrate both current usability (via the website) and future vision (via the app prototype).
Challenges we ran into
- Designing a consistent and accessible UI that worked well on both desktop and mobile
- Ensuring the About page accurately matched the desired overlay + grayscale style
- Managing dynamic section switching without using external JS frameworks
- Making file uploads intuitive without backend integration (for demo purposes)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional multi-section website in under 24 hours
- Created a responsive and polished UI with zero frameworks
- Achieved smooth transitions and section toggling using pure HTML, CSS, and JS
- The design and functionality clearly communicated our mission—and students LOVED the idea during testing!
What we learned
- How to design a SPA using only vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Building with accessibility and usability in mind
- Applying branding consistently across pages
- The power of simple, focused ideas—people don’t need fancy tech, just smart solutions to real problems
What's next for AggieClaim
Building a fully functional app over the summer'25 and hopping to launch it for UC DAVIS by Fall'25
