Aggie Athletics Mobile App

Encourages student engagement with UC Davis athletic teams by allowing them to see upcoming events while on the go, check-in at events to earn points and earn rewards.

Inspiration

As current 4th year students who transferred in Fall 2020 and experienced our first year at Davis remotely, we were motivated to be active members in student life, including attending sports events. Initially, we learned about sports events by looking through the UC Davis Athletics website, but on a mobile device, opening it up on the browser isn't as convenient as opening an app. We wanted to take on this project to create what we hoped we could have found on the App Store when we first came to Davis in September.

What it does

UC Davis Athletics currently advertises upcoming sports events through its website and social media platforms. This mobile app will allow students to quickly

  • read the latest news in athletics
  • view a calendar of upcoming events including opponents, sport, location, and tickets information
  • check-in when they arrive at an event by enabling location permission and scanning a QR code available onsite
  • scroll through a list of prizes they can win after earning X number of points
  • access their profile which includes their accumulated points

How we built it

We utilized Google Flutter, Firebase, and Cloud to create the app. Flutter is great for streamlining development in mobile (iOS and Android) and desktop devices, and there are many plug-ins available. We used Google Firebase and Cloud as our database service. We used an iOS emulator on VSCode to develop our project and GitHub as our version control system.

Challenges we ran into

The majority of our team members did not have prior experience coding in Dart programming language so we were learning it within these 24 hours.

We are proud to present a clean and user-friendly application that students interested in UC Davis Athletics will enjoy using.

What we learned

There are many steps in development that we have learned to appreciate. As students, often times our professors specify what they are looking for, but in this Hackathon, we were presented with challenges that tested our skills in code, design, and communication.

  • Full month calendar view
  • Game Recaps
  • Subscribe to notifications about specific sports such as event reminders, game recaps, and associated blog posts
