Inspiration

AI agents are becoming capable of performing tasks autonomously by reasoning, using tools, and interacting with external systems. However, giving an AI agent the ability to act also creates a new problem: what happens when the agent makes the wrong decision?

An agent may misunderstand a user's intent, rely on incomplete evidence, select the wrong target, or attempt a risky action. A traditional agent architecture often follows a simple pattern: plan and execute.

We wanted to explore a safer approach.

This led us to build AgentShield, a Guardian layer for autonomous AI agents that verifies proposed actions against user intent, available evidence, and potential risk before allowing them to execute.

Our goal is not to remove autonomy from AI agents, but to make that autonomy more verifiable, controlled, and recoverable.

What it does

AgentShield is an autonomous AI operations agent built around a Planner–Executor–Guardian architecture.

The system accepts a user's request, plans the required actions, and uses available tools to gather information. Before an action is executed, the AgentShield Guardian evaluates the proposed action.

It checks:

  • Whether the action matches the user's original intent
  • Whether sufficient evidence supports the decision
  • Whether the selected target or recipient is correct
  • Whether the action introduces a significant risk

Based on these checks, AgentShield can:

ALLOW — approve a sufficiently verified action.

BLOCK — stop an action that conflicts with user intent, lacks evidence, or presents unacceptable risk.

RECOVER — identify a failure, revise the plan, and attempt a safer approach.

For our prototype, we demonstrated this concept using a business operations scenario involving overdue supplier orders. The agent identifies an overdue order and prepares a follow-up action, while the Guardian verifies the order information and intended recipient before the action is allowed to proceed.

This demonstrates the core principle:

An AI-generated action should be verified before it becomes a real-world action.

How we built it

AgentShield uses a modular agent architecture that separates task planning, tool execution, and action verification.
