Inspiration

As AI agents become capable of reasoning and assisting users in real-time, commerce needs to keep pace. Traditional e-commerce requires manual browsing, rigid checkout funnels, and tedious cart processes. AgenticPay AI was inspired by the concept of agentic commerce: enabling conversational AI to dynamically assess user intent, curate customized service or product offers on the fly, and execute secure checkout instantly.

What it does

AgenticPay AI acts as an autonomous shopping and service assistant. Users interact with the agent in plain English (e.g., asking for technical consultations or AI API credits). The agent evaluates the request, dynamic constructs a tailor-made product offer, and renders an embedded, executable PayPal Checkout widget right inside the conversational interface. Users can authorize payment via PayPal in seconds without leaving the chat.

How we built it

• Backend: Built with Node.js and Express to securely manage PayPal OAuth authentication (/v1/oauth2/token) and orchestrate server-side order creation (/v2/checkout/orders) and capture.
• Frontend: Built using clean vanilla HTML5, CSS3, and modern JavaScript, dynamically injecting the official PayPal JavaScript SDK for rendering Smart Payment Buttons.
• Security & Environment: Utilized dotenv for handling secure credentials and communication with PayPal Sandbox endpoints.

Challenges we ran into

One key technical hurdle was managing real-time dynamic rendering of the PayPal SDK script within an asynchronous chat UI without causing container duplication or script loading conflicts across multiple interactive messages. We solved this by implementing unique container IDs and lifecycle checks for the PayPal SDK initialization.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Successfully building an end-to-end working prototype that connects conversational AI workflows directly with live PayPal payment captures.
• Creating an ultra-responsive, accessible UI that handles the entire buyer journey—from initial prompt to payment confirmation—in under 60 seconds.

What we learned

We gained deep hands-on experience with PayPal's v2 Checkout APIs, OAuth token lifecycle management, and the design patterns necessary for seamless agentic UI integration.

What's next for AgenticPay AI

• Integrating full LLM function-calling capabilities (OpenAI/Claude APIs) for dynamic multi-item negotiation.
• Adding multi-currency support and automated recurring subscription invoicing via PayPal Subscriptions API.
