Inspiration

I love solving Sudoku puzzles like many of us. Sudoku is one of the world’s purest logic games.

But online Sudoku has a physical barrier for some people. Solving a hard puzzle requires numerous micro-clicks. For many people living with essential tremors, RSI (repetitive strain injury), or motor disabilities, the physical tax ruins the mental joy.

Purpose of Agentic Sudoku is to enable users to play online Sudoku hands free , assisted by Agent.

What it does

Human Speaks in Codex App -> Agent uses WebMCP -> Action happens on Sudoku Board.

Agentic Sudoku is an online Sudoku puzzle application powered by WebMCP.

It enables the human and agent to collaborate while solving Sudoku.

Human can play Sudoku hands free with help of Agent.

18 WebMCP tools are configured which let user do everything by talking to agent.

A Codex Skill is delivered to open the web application in the in-app browser and just solve Sudoku puzzle hands free (by talking to agent).

How it was built

Agentic Sudoku is a 100% client-side, zero-backend application designed for seamless WebMCP integration.

Frontend - Next.js (App Router), React, and Tailwind CSS.

WebMCP Architecture - WebMCP tools which can read, annotate, act and control Sudoku. So that human only has to speak to agent without placing hands on keyboard.

Puzzle Engine - sudoku-gen for client-side board generation.

Codex Skill Integration - A dedicated standard Codex Skill included in the repository, giving OpenAI agents an out-of-the-box playbook for navigating the site, executing coaching sequences, and providing hands-free accessibility.

Hosting - Deployed on Vercel.

Spec-Driven Development - The project was built using SpecKit.

Challenges

The biggest challenge was designing the WebMCP schema. Had to carefully engineer the tools to ensure they never expose the puzzle’s final hidden solution. The agent must reason dynamically using only the visible board constraints to guide the player.

Accomplishments

  • Successfully decoupled joy of Sudoku from the physical friction of playing it.

  • Shipped robust WebMCP tools.

Learnings

Hands on experience with WebMCP. It turns the browser DOM into a shared, collaborative workspace.

What's next for Agentic Sudoku

  • Allowing users to scan a Sudoku puzzle from a physical newspaper using their camera, parse it into the web app.
