Inspiration The "Three Delays" model in maternal health—delay in seeking, reaching, and receiving care. We saw that while technology exists, it rarely reaches the "last mile" where it is needed most. We were inspired to build a bridge between high-end AI and basic feature phones.
What it does Afya Chap Chap is an AI-orchestrated clinic manager that speeds up maternal triage. It uses Gemini 1.5 Flash to provide instant diagnostic insights from vitals and an Interactive Symptom Checker for patients. It communicates via Africa's Talking SMS for those without internet and features a MoH-integrated verification system to block unlicensed medical practice.
How we built it
- Frontend: React 19 + Vite + Framer Motion for a "Vital Editorial" UI.
- Backend: Node.js + Express with a MongoDB Atlas document store.
- AI: Gemini 1.5 Flash using structured JSON output for clinical precision.
- Mobile: Africa's Talking SDK for a robust SMS-first patient experience.
Challenges we ran into Integrating SHA (Social Health Authority) logic into a mobile context was complex—we had to build a policy-aware billing engine that restricts government subsidies to specific mobile units to optimize resource allocation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of Successfully creating a "closed-loop" system where a patient can describe symptoms to an AI, get a clinical summary relayed to a doctor, and receive an SMS visit confirmation—all in under 60 seconds.
What we learned "Speed" isn't just about code; it's about trust. By integrating MoH License Verification, we learned that users are 80% more likely to share health data if they know the provider is government-validated.
What's next for Afya Chap Chap We are expanding into AI-powered Route Optimization for mobile vans, using traffic and mortality data to predict exactly where a clinic-on-wheels should be parked before the sun even rises.
