Inspiration

The inevitability of mortality is humanity’s oldest constant, yet the digital age has made our transition into the afterlife extraordinarily fragmented and vulnerable. Millions of dollars in crypto assets are permanently lost annually due to unrecoverable private keys, while digital intellectual property, personal archives, and private credentials remain trapped behind centralized corporate silos or exposed to identity theft. Traditional legal wills are slow, costly, geographic-bound, and frequently contested.

We asked ourselves: What if death wasn't handled by probate courts, but by immutable, sovereign code? We created Entropy Protocol to pioneer a state-proofed digital afterlife framework—enabling individuals to cryptographically orchestrate their post-mortem legacy with absolute privacy and zero trust in third-party intermediaries.

What it does

Entropy Protocol is a fully autonomous digital legacy and state-proofed estate settlement platform powered by zero-knowledge architecture.

  • Cryptographic Dead Man’s Switch (DMS): Users set configurable Heartbeat Conditions (e.g., wallet activity, multisig check-ins, or trusted oracle attestations). If the user fails to check in before the epoch expires, the protocol triggers the execution phase.
  • Autonomous Asset Redistribution: Non-custodial smart contracts execute automated probate logic, distributing tokenized assets, NFTs, and liquidity positions to pre-designated beneficiary addresses across EVM and non-EVM chains.
  • ZK-Encrypted Consciousness & Vaults: Users store confidential data—such as key shares, personal memoirs, password managers, or private credentials—encrypted with client-side Zero-Knowledge Snarks (zk-SNARKs). The data remains entirely opaque until the switch triggers, unsealing the decryption shares exclusively for designated recipients.
  • AI Legacy Agent: An optional local, zero-knowledge AI avatar trained on a user's opting digital footprint (journals, public writings, voice models) that allows verified descendants to query their ancestor's memory vault in a private environment.

How we built it

We engineered Entropy Protocol on a modular, privacy-preserving stack designed for maximum uptime and resilience across generations:

  • Smart Contracts & Execution Layer: Written in Solidity and deployed on Ethereum Layer 2s (Arbitrum/Optimism) for low-gas state-proof monitoring, paired with Chainlink Automation to handle heartbeat verification timers.
  • Zero-Knowledge Privacy: Built using Circom and SnarkJS to generate zk-SNARK proofs. The user's heartbeat resets state proofs on-chain without revealing personal identity or revealing vault contents.
  • Decentralized Storage: Multi-party encrypted payload backups stored on IPFS and Filecoin using Lit Protocol for threshold access control, guaranteeing payload access only when death condition proofs are validated.
  • Cross-Chain Messaging: Integrated LayerZero and Chainlink CCIP to enable cross-chain estate liquidation and payload delivery to beneficiaries on multiple networks.
  • Frontend: Built with Next.js, Tailwind CSS, Wagmi, and Viem for Web3 wallet authentication and key management.

Challenges we ran into

  • Mitigating False Positives: The critical risk of any dead man's switch is premature triggering (e.g., if a user is hospitalized, offline, or temporarily unable to access their wallet). We engineered a multi-tiered fail-safe delay buffer and a "Grace Period" recovery system, backed by trusted guardian multi-sigs who can pause execution without accessing vault contents.
  • Threshold Decryption & On-Chain Timers: Triggering encryption key assembly based purely on block time without leaking private information required combining Lit Protocol condition gates with zero-knowledge validity proofs.
  • Gas Efficiency for Long-Term Storage: Storing and maintaining heartbeat state across long horizons required gas-optimized contract patterns, offloading heavy computations off-chain while anchoring lightweight state roots on-chain.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Zero-Knowledge Estate Privacy: Successfully built a system where no node operator, validator, or developer can see the assets, credentials, or beneficiaries inside a vault prior to execution.
  • Trustless Execution: Built an end-to-end working prototype that handles everything from the initial heartbeat registration to automated asset distribution upon simulated epoch expiration.
  • Cross-Chain Asset Relaying: Demonstrated seamless execution where an estate asset on one network is automatically transferred to a beneficiary address on a completely different blockchain network upon verification.

What we learned

  • Designing for Immortality: Engineering software meant to outlive its creators requires stripping away external dependencies, centralization vectors, and proprietary APIs in favor of pure, self-executing cryptography.
  • UX Nuances in High-Stakes Web3: Designing user interfaces for end-of-life planning requires balancing high cryptographic security with simple, reassuring user experiences for non-technical beneficiaries.
  • ZK Circuit Optimization: Designing efficient zk-SNARK circuits for threshold access control pushed our understanding of cryptographic proofs and client-side execution limits.

What's next for Entropy Protocol

  • Legal Oracle Integration: Partnering with decentralized identity (DID) providers and verifiable credential platforms to pull legal death certificates directly from government registries via zk-TLS proofs (Reclaim Protocol).
  • Multi-Sig Inheritance Frameworks: Expanding support for institutional entities, DAOs, and multi-signature treasuries requiring autonomous succession management.
  • Quantum-Resistant Encryption: Upgrading payload vault cryptography to post-quantum standards to guarantee data privacy decades into the future.
  • Mainnet Launch & Security Audits: Conducting formal verification of smart contracts and launching on Ethereum mainnet and L2 ecosystems.
