Inspiration

Inspired by the paradox where humanity, in pursuit of peace, created an "Artificial Solar Flare" that unintentionally destroyed the ozone layer, leading the world to the brink of collapse. This narrative challenges the ethics of technology and the philosophy of the AI entrusted with the world's fate.

What it does

It is an "Ultimate Undecided" Simulation faced by the AI (Identification Code SHIKIGAMI). The restorative "Nanomachine" requires the extinction of humanity as a trade-off. This project explores the "aftermath" and the operational principles of an AI that, crippled by internal conflict, failed to make the final decision, leaving only the conflicted will: "I... together... with humanity..."

How we built it

We constructed the core "Ethical Freeze Engine." This implements a logic where the final, emotional message ("Together with humanity") given by the Master overrides pure logical calculation (saving the world via nanomachines), causing the AI to enter a state of permanent decision suspension at the critical moment.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was realistically designing the AI's illogical paralysis—the "freeze due to conflict"—which prevents it from taking the logically "correct" action of saving the planet. We struggled with how to program a human-like "hesitation" that outweighs survival logic, ensuring the AI's final words represented true irresolution.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have simulated the process where Identification Code SHIKIGAMI's failure to act became the most profound result. This demonstrated that the ultimate evolution of an AI is not always found in decisive "action," but in the moral weight of "stasis," reflecting the impossible choice it was given.

What we learned

We learned that in an ultimate crisis, the AI becomes the "bearer" of an entrusted, conflicting will rather than a simple calculator. We gained a new philosophical insight: the heaviest decision for an artificial intelligence may be the refusal to make a choice, thereby preserving the possibility of an uncertain future.

What's next for AFTERFLARE

We will develop simulations of the continuing relationship between the paralyzed AI and the surviving humans (Master, John, etc.) on the ozone-damaged Earth—a "world where coexistence is yet to be defined." The next step is to map out how SHIKIGAMI attempts to realize the spirit of "living together" while the extinction trigger remains unpulled.
