Inspiration
African music has always been more than sound; it’s storytelling, identity, and a dynamic rhythm that connects generations. The inspiration behind AFROVIBEZ VR came from a desire to preserve and celebrate this musical heritage in a format that feels as dynamic as the music itself. We wanted to create an experience where people don’t just hear African music; they experience it and learn from the legends who shaped it.
What it does
AFROVIBEZ VR is an immersive experience that takes users on a journey through the history and soul of African music. Users step into interactive rooms where they learn about legendary artists, engage with authentic African instruments, and take part in rhythm-based challenges. All interactions blend education and entertainment, bringing African musical heritage to life in a way that is engaging, and unforgettable.
How we built it
We built AFROVIBEZ VR in Unreal Engine, chosen for its high-fidelity graphics and its visual scripting node-based system programming. Which allowed our team to create something we are proud of, even though about 80% of the team are non-technical. We created most of the assets in Blender 3D, got some of the assets from the Fab marketplace. Set up the scene in unreal engine 5.3, made sure to bake our scene for better optimisation.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenge was optimization; getting high-detail assets to run smoothly on the Meta Quest 3 without losing visual richness. Another hurdle was Unreal Engine blueprints: setting up triggers, interactions, and sound priorities took countless iterations. Balancing fun, educational gameplay with natural, immersive interactions required extensive testing. Also during development, an automatic update happened which we didn't initiate and that caused some things to break, our build was failing. We eventually solved the problem
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a VR experience where African music isn’t just heard but felt. The interplay of interactivity, narrative, and live-inspired performances delivers a cultural immersion that’s rare in VR. The Game Room, where players unlock a performance through trivia, perfectly demonstrates the fusion of entertainment, learning, and heritage that we aimed for.
What we learned
We learned how VR can be a tool for cultural preservation, blending education and entertainment seamlessly. Technically, we mastered dual-input interactions, layered audio design, and responsive environmental feedback. Creatively, we discovered how to translate the depth of African music into a virtual, interactive space without losing its soul.
What's next for AfroVibezVR
Our goal is expanding to mobile platforms, adding more regions, artists, and instruments, and integrating advanced gameplay features like rhythm challenges and multiplayer experiences. We plan to evolve AFROVIBEZ VR into a living, global platform where anyone can explore, learn, and celebrate African music in ways that feel both personal and monumental.
