Inspiration

Afro Connection was born from the need to address the challenges that Black-owned businesses face in gaining visibility and connecting with consumers. Many entrepreneurs struggle with marketing and reaching the right audience due to outdated directories and limited exposure. Inspired by the desire to support my community and create a platform that celebrates Black entrepreneurship, I set out to build a solution that would make it easier for people to discover and support these businesses.

What it does

Afro Connection is a user-friendly platform that helps people discover and support Black-owned businesses through a powerful search directory, smart filtering, and interactive business profiles. The platform allows consumers to find businesses based on categories, location, and other preferences, all while amplifying the voices of Black entrepreneurs and their unique stories.

How we built it

The platform was built using ReactJS for the front-end, Firebase for backend services, and the Google Maps API to help users locate businesses. We focused on creating an intuitive design with features like search functionality, smart filtering, and interactive business profiles. The development process involved close collaboration with business owners to gather accurate data, followed by extensive testing and iteration to ensure a smooth user experience.

Challenges we ran into

Building Afro Connection wasn’t without its challenges. One major obstacle was gathering accurate and up-to-date data, as many business owners did not have an online presence. Additionally, convincing users to adopt a new platform and encouraging business owners to create profiles presented some difficulties. Balancing the platform’s design with functionality and ensuring a seamless user experience also required careful attention.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re incredibly proud of creating a platform that empowers both Black entrepreneurs and consumers. Afro Connection has successfully connected users with Black-owned businesses, providing a space for entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services. Additionally, the platform has fostered a sense of community by allowing users to support businesses that align with their values.

What we learned

Throughout the development process, we learned the value of accessibility and the importance of creating a platform that is easy to use for both entrepreneurs and consumers. We also gained insights into the power of community-driven solutions and how technology can create meaningful social impact. Lastly, we learned the importance of perseverance in overcoming challenges and staying focused on the mission.

What's next for Afro Connection

Looking ahead, we plan to expand the platform’s features, including adding more robust filtering options, integrating social media sharing for businesses, and developing a mobile app for even greater accessibility. We also aim to scale the platform, reaching more Black-owned businesses and consumers nationwide, ultimately creating a larger community of support and fostering continued growth for Black entrepreneurship.
