Inspiration

Afriscan was born out of a real and urgent problem the rising burden of tuberculosis (TB) across Africa. TB remains one of the leading causes of death on the continent, yet diagnosis is often delayed due to limited access to specialists and slow, manual processes.

Seeing how many lives are affected simply because diagnosis comes too late, we were inspired to build a solution that could accelerate detection and support healthcare professionals. Afriscan started as a mission to fight TB, but quickly evolved into a broader vision: transforming how diseases are detected across Africa using AI.

What it does

Afriscan is an AI-powered diagnostic platform that analyzes medical imaging such as X-rays and CT scans to assist healthcare providers in detecting diseases faster and more accurately.

It acts as a decision-support tool for doctors, helping reduce diagnostic delays, improve accuracy, and ultimately save lives, starting with tuberculosis and expanding into other critical conditions.

How we built it

Afriscan is being developed by combining expertise in software engineering, artificial intelligence, and healthcare problem-solving.

The platform is designed to process medical imaging data and generate insights that support diagnosis. Development has focused on building a scalable backend, integrating AI models for imaging analysis, and designing a system that can work in real-world African healthcare environments, including low-resource settings.

The goal has always been to build something practical, not just technically impressive.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges has been working within the complexity of healthcare systems, where accuracy, reliability, and trust are critical.

Access to high-quality medical data for training and validation is also a significant hurdle, especially in regions where data infrastructure is limited. Additionally, ensuring that the solution is both powerful and accessible in low-resource environments requires careful technical and design decisions.

Balancing innovation with real-world usability has been a constant challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have taken Afriscan from an idea inspired by a real health crisis to a working concept with a clear path to deployment.

The ability to design a solution that directly addresses diagnostic gaps in Africa and positions itself as a scalable healthcare infrastructure is a major milestone.

More importantly, we are proud of building something with the potential to save lives, not just generate revenue.

What we learned

Through building Afriscan, we’ve learned that solving real-world problems requires more than just technology it requires understanding the environment in which the solution will operate.

We’ve learned the importance of simplicity, reliability, and user-centered design, especially in healthcare. We’ve also learned that impact-driven innovation requires persistence, adaptability, and a clear vision.

What's next for AfriScan

The next phase for Afriscan is focused on scaling from development to real-world impact.

This includes advancing the AI models, securing clinical validation through partnerships with healthcare institutions, and deploying pilot programs in hospitals.

Over time, Afriscan aims to expand beyond tuberculosis into a broader range of diseases, becoming a core diagnostic infrastructure layer across African healthcare systems and other emerging markets.
