Inspiration

A few months ago, I ran into someone on my college campus. When I told him I was from Africa, he said something I'm not allowed to say here. This brought to light an undeniable fact: the face of Africa has been tainted by prejudice and misinformation. Given the theme of this year's Blackathon, #CommitToChange, my friend and I decided to create a web app that showcases Africa's true beauty. We are committing to changing the face of Africa and all of its peoples by doing so.

What it does

This is a website that features a web map. There's an icon of each African country which when clicked on brings up a popup with a fun fact about a country and a web link to the official visitor/tourism of the country

How we built it

We built the website using Bootstrap studio. The web map was built with python using google colab notebook. We linked the web map to the website using iframes in Visual Studio Code.

Challenges we ran into

We had trouble sourcing the official visitor sites of all the countries We didn't have enough time to add all the African countries on our web map

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud and happy that our website was able to fully function the way we planned We are also extremely happy we pulled this off in a day

What we learned

  1. We learned how to use Folium and customize web maps
  2. We learned to imbed websites together
  3. We learned how to style HTML in python
  4. Learned how to read CSV files in python ## What's next for AfriMap We would like to add all the African countries. The next step after this would be to add more information about each African country such as social media accounts people can follow to see more of what each country has to offer
