Inspiration
A lot of my friends have been trying to organize events like birthday parties. And inviting people manually has been a problem even keeping up with the people who are coming to the event. Which gave me the idea of trying to build a social media platform dedicated just for events to allow businesses / organizations and people to create events, and invite people and keep up with the attendees and share the special moments of these evens with each other. And a friend of mine, Goodluck from Dar Es Salaam who had the same idea to help find weekend events to attend after tiresome weekdays, which thrusted the need to try it out , but didn't know where to start at first, till the Bolt door came up. Hence the name Xhubantu means " to connect people " . Xhuma means " connect" in Zulu and Bantu means "people" in Zulu.
What it does
The platform essentially is an event planner and manager. It allows users to sign up onto the platform and create or view events and share them. Where if the event is public then they can just join in to attend the event which can be used by concert planners and can use it to digitally invite people to big events. And if they want the event to be private, they can set it to be a private event where only people with the link and codes can be allowed to view the event and view the moments that happened in the event.
How I built it
My approach to building it was to essentially follow the already existing philosophy of how the social media networks operate to allow the users to intuitively use it and allow them to engage with their already existing social media platforms to share the events. So I basically began with a prompt and walked myself through the process of prompting to fix the problems.
Challenges I ran into
- At times the app simply didn't make the changes expected, but this is on the fault of me for not providing clear explanations of what I needed it to do, especially with the UI design of the application.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- I am personally happy, that I was able to create a web application and host it online to be accessible to other people.
What I learned
- I learnt how to add firebase to your project, and to integrate it with other providers
- I learnt about the workings of the Vite framework, I personally never used it.
- Learnt how you can serve different views for both Web and Mobile users on the same code base over the web.
What's next for Xhubantu
- Personally I think social media platforms need to change to adapt to the needs of the society unlike other software like AI were the users need to change to meet the software specs and how to use it, and society especially businesses need to find better ways and more organized ways to connect people seamlessly and maintain connection.
- Where I'd be happy to link up with my friends who are interested to make it a success, and help people create events and share them with other people, to promote socialization in the society and be part of the tools bringing people together to in this age where more connections are in need.
