Inspiration
Across many African countries, child online safety policies and age-verification regulations remain limited or inconsistently enforced. While internet access continues to grow, most countries rely on voluntary platform rules rather than nationally enforced age-verification systems. As a result, children are often exposed to inappropriate or low-quality content long before they are developmentally ready. AfriLearnia was inspired by this regulatory gap and by parents’ desire for safe, educational digital spaces where children can learn, explore, and grow without the risks associated with unregulated platforms.
## What it does
AfriLearnia is a game-based learning platform for children that provides a safe alternative to unrestricted digital content. Through animated stories and interactive gameplay, children learn African history, culture, and values while actively engaging with educational material instead of passively consuming content.
## How we built it
AfriLearnia is a web-based interactive learning platform built with Next.js (v14) and React for the frontend, creating smooth, interactive gameplay. We use Prisma as the ORM with PostgreSQL to manage user progress, game states, and question data. Authentication and user management follow best practices to ensure a safe environment for children. For the demo, we used ready-made game assets, such as maps and avatars, to focus on functionality and gameplay. In future versions, these assets will be replaced with custom African-themed designs to better reflect the cultural stories and learning experiences we aim to provide.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was designing gameplay that is both fun and educational at the same time. We also had to ensure that the content was culturally accurate, age-appropriate, and engaging for children. Working under time constraints meant focusing on delivering a playable demo rather than a fully expanded platform. Additionally, we had to address digital safety concerns in regions where online regulations are limited, while still making the experience enjoyable for children.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have delivered a playable, interactive learning demo that successfully combines storytelling, gameplay, and cultural education. AfriLearnia creates a safe digital space for children even in contexts where policy enforcement is limited. We demonstrated that screen time can be transformed into meaningful educational experiences, and we built a scalable foundation for future growth with the potential for custom African-themed assets and expanded content.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned that combining storytelling with interactive gameplay significantly improves engagement and knowledge retention for children. We discovered that designing educational experiences requires a careful balance between fun, cultural relevance, and safety. Prototyping under hackathon constraints taught us how to prioritize features effectively and deliver impactful demos quickly. We also realized that technology can play a vital role in addressing gaps left by regulatory frameworks, providing safe and educational digital experiences.
What's next for AfriLearnia
In the future, AfriLearnia could evolve from a 2D puzzle-platformer into a more advanced 3D interactive learning experience or a multi-world adventure, featuring richer environments, more complex puzzles, and collaborative multiplayer features to further engage children. We also plan to collaborate with local artists, storytellers, and educators to create culturally authentic content and animations. Beyond history and culture, AfriLearnia could expand to teach additional skills, such as coding concepts, music theory, or other creative subjects, turning the platform into a versatile educational hub where children can learn and play simultaneously
