Inspiration

Growing up in Nigeria, we experienced firsthand how broken and limited our traditional education system was. Despite being bright and eager to learn, many of our peers were held back by outdated teaching methods, poor learning materials, and a one-size-fits-all approach. Fast-forward to today, millions of African children still face that same problem, a lack of access to quality, engaging, and affordable education.

That reality lit a fire in us. We built Afrilearn to solve a personal pain and a continental crisis: to democratize world-class education for every African child, regardless of background or location. But along the way, we realized it’s not just about students. School owners and teachers need help, too. That’s why we expanded Afrilearn to include a powerful, easy-to-use School Management Software that helps schools run smarter, not harder.

What it does

Afrilearn offers two powerful, connected tools:

Afrilearn Learning App A gamified, AI-powered learning platform for K-12 African Learners. It helps them: Watch engaging animated video lessons Study with simplified notes and past questions Prepare for BECE, JSCE, WAEC, and more Learn at their own pace—offline or online Track progress and earn points on leaderboards

Afrilearn School Management Software A smart, cloud-based solution for African schools to: Manage students and teachers easily Record results and attendance in minutes Track fee payments and generate invoices Share learning materials and announcements Gain real-time insights into school operations It’s designed to save time, reduce errors, and improve communication, with zero tech stress.

How we built it

We started by listening to students, parents, teachers, and school owners across Nigeria. We asked: What slows you down? What frustrates you daily? What would make school better?

Then we built Afrilearn in two parts: For the Learning App, we partnered with curriculum experts and animators to create thousands of topic-by-topic lessons, notes, and exam prep tools. For the School Management Software, we co-created with school admins, adding features they truly needed, not just fancy dashboards, but practical tools that reduce their daily workload.

Challenges we ran into

Schools were used to pen and paper, getting them to trust software was hard at first. Many school owners don’t have time to learn tech, so we had to design for non-techies. Supporting schools in multiple states meant dealing with different calendars, fee structures, and grading systems. Building high-quality animations and curriculum-aligned lessons at scale took time and money.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Reached over 3,000,000 learners and counting Partnered with UNICEF to bring learning to underserved students Built Nigeria’s most visited site for curriculum-based based notes: ClassNotes.ng Launched Afrilearn School Software, already adopted by 50+ schools Helped schools reduce admin work by up to 70% Won multiple awards: Digital Innovation of the Year – US Chamber of Commerce Top 50 Innovations in Africa – African Union Changemaker of the Year – ACT Foundation

What we learned

Schools don’t just want tech. They want peace of mind. Students learn better when lessons are fun, short, and relatable. Teachers love tools that save them time, not just look flashy. School owners want better control of their finances and communication. For mass adoption, your product must work even without a strong internet connection. The best products are co-built with the people who use them.

What's next for Afrilearn

Scale to 20,000,000 learners. Expand Afrilearn App into other African countries Add support for local African languages (Yoruba, Swahili, etc.) Onboard 1,000+ schools to our School Software Add auto-result generation with grading logic by state Launch parent mobile app for instant communication Introduce AI-powered school performance dashboards Partner with state governments and private school associations

Afrilearn is more than an edtech platform. It’s a movement. And we’re just getting started.
