Inspiration
Africa's informal economy is the backbone of millions of livelihoods, yet many small business owners still rely on memory, paper notebooks, and word of mouth to manage their daily operations. Existing accounting and business management tools are often designed for formal businesses, making them too complex or inaccessible for everyday traders.
We envisioned a different approach: What if managing a business was as simple as having a conversation?
That idea became AfriChain—a voice-first AI business assistant that understands local languages, helps entrepreneurs manage their finances, organize their businesses, and make smarter decisions using real-time market intelligence.
What it does
AfriChain enables business owners to run their businesses using natural voice conversations in English, Nigerian Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo.
Users can:
- 🎙️ Record sales and expenses by speaking naturally.
- 📒 Track debts and customer payments.
- 👥 Assign and manage staff tasks through voice commands.
- 📊 Receive AI-generated business insights and profit summaries.
- 📈 Access live commodity price information across different markets, helping traders compare prices before buying or selling.
- 💬 Ask business questions in everyday language and receive simple, conversational responses.
Instead of learning accounting software, entrepreneurs simply talk to AfriChain like they would talk to a trusted business assistant.
How we built it
We built AfriChain using a modern AI-powered architecture focused on simplicity and scalability.
Our stack includes:
- React for the frontend experience.
- Node.js + Express for backend APIs.
- Supabase (PostgreSQL) for storing business records.
- Speech-to-Text for converting voice into structured actions.
- Large Language Models (LLMs) for intent recognition and conversational responses.
- Text-to-Speech to provide spoken feedback.
- A modular service architecture that can integrate live market data providers, commodity exchanges, and additional AI capabilities as the platform evolves.
The system was designed so that new countries, languages, and services can be added without redesigning the core platform.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was designing an experience that understands how real traders actually communicate. Users don't speak in structured commands—they speak naturally, often mixing local languages with English or Pidgin.
Another challenge was market data availability. Reliable commodity pricing is fragmented across different regions, so we designed a flexible aggregation layer capable of integrating multiple trusted data sources while demonstrating the concept within the hackathon timeframe.
Balancing ambitious functionality with a limited 24-hour development window also required careful prioritization. We focused on building the core experience that best demonstrates our vision.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a voice-first business management experience tailored for Africa's informal economy.
- Designed multilingual interactions to make AI more accessible to non-technical users.
- Combined bookkeeping, staff management, and AI-powered business insights into a single conversational platform.
- Introduced a market intelligence feature that helps traders make better buying and selling decisions through live commodity price comparisons.
- Created a scalable architecture capable of expanding across multiple African countries and languages.
What we learned
Building AfriChain taught us that the most impactful technology isn't necessarily the most complex—it's the technology that removes barriers for everyday people.
We also learned that voice interfaces, multilingual AI, and market intelligence become significantly more powerful when combined into a single user experience. Instead of forcing entrepreneurs to adapt to software, software should adapt to how entrepreneurs naturally work.
Finally, we gained valuable experience designing AI systems that solve real, localized problems rather than generic use cases.
What's next for AfriChain
Our vision extends far beyond bookkeeping.
Next, we plan to:
- 🌍 Expand to more African countries and languages.
- 📡 Integrate additional live commodity price sources and market data providers.
- 📦 Add inventory and stock management.
- 🚚 Recommend nearby suppliers and logistics options.
- 📈 Introduce AI-powered demand forecasting and price trend predictions.
- 💳 Integrate digital payments, lending, and insurance services.
- 🤝 Build a trusted market intelligence network powered by verified traders, cooperatives, and public data.
Our long-term goal is to make AfriChain the AI operating system for Africa's informal economy, empowering millions of entrepreneurs with tools that are intelligent, accessible, and built for the realities of doing business across the continent.
