Inspiration

Growing up in Africa, I was always fascinated by the rich mythology and folklore passed down through generations—stories of ancestral spirits, ancient deities, and sacred rituals that connected us to our heritage. But I noticed something troubling: African culture is often underrepresented in gaming, especially in the blockchain and Web3 space. When I discovered the Kiro Hackathon focused on spooky games and Hedera blockchain, I saw an opportunity to merge three passions:

Preserving African heritage through interactive storytelling Creating genuinely spooky experiences rooted in authentic African folklore (not Western horror tropes) Building Web3 games that reward cultural education with real blockchain assets

The inspiration struck: What if players could journey across Africa, exploring real UNESCO World Heritage Sites, collecting ancestral spirits as NFTs, and learning about ancient civilizations—all while experiencing spine-chilling encounters with African deities, devils, and masked spirits?

How we built it

Development Process: Phase 1: Research & Cultural Accuracy (Week 1)

Studied UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Lalibela churches, Benin bronzes) Researched authentic African mythology (not Hollywood stereotypes!) Consulted historical sources on Dogon astronomy, Ethiopian Orthodox traditions, Maasai warriors Designed culturally accurate visual assets (masks, clothing, architecture)

Phase 2: Core Gameplay Loop (Week 2)

Built 5 distinct gameplay mechanics (2D exploration, 3D FPS, twin-stick shooter, survival action) Implemented character selection system with West African heroes Created boss battle system with Ethiopian devil encounter Added 2-player co-op mode for Senegal level

Phase 3: Audio & Atmosphere (Week 3)

Integrated ElevenLabs API for AI-generated cultural sounds Crafted 50+ audio prompts (Afrobeat, Orthodox chants, tribal drums, war cries) Implemented dynamic music transitions (calm → intense battle mode) Added sound effects for every action (laser fire, spear throw, holy fire)

Phase 4: Blockchain Integration (Week 4)

Connected Hedera testnet Implemented HBAR reward system Added wallet connection UI (HashConnect ready) Designed NFT metadata for spirit collectibles

Phase 5: Polish & Testing

Optimized Three.js performance Added loading screens and tutorials Playtested all 5 levels Fixed bugs and balanced difficulty

Challenges we ran into

Cultural Authenticity vs. Entertainment

Challenge: How do we make African culture "spooky" without being disrespectful or using stereotypes? Solution: Researched real historical events (e.g., Dogon knowledge of Sirius B star system, Ethiopian Orthodox exorcism rituals) and presented them with reverence while maintaining horror atmosphere

  1. Three.js Performance with Multiple Levels

Challenge: Running 3D scenes smoothly across 5 different levels Solution: Implemented scene cleanup, object pooling, and lazy loading. Each level only renders when active.

  1. ElevenLabs Audio Integration

Challenge: Generating authentic African sounds without a database of samples Solution: Crafted detailed audio prompts describing specific instruments (djembe, balafon, kora, talking drums) mixed with game sound effects. Implemented fallback Web Audio API when API limits hit.

  1. 2-Player Synchronization

Challenge: Managing two players with different controls (WASD + Arrow keys) in real-time Solution: Used ref-based state management to avoid re-render lag, implemented separate player refs for position tracking

  1. Boss Battle Balance

Challenge: Making Ethiopian devil fight challenging but fair Solution: Added 500 HP boss, 25 damage per hit, 10-charge holy fire system with 3s cooldown, visual health bar

  1. Educational Content Without Breaking Immersion

Challenge: Teaching African history without boring players Solution: Embedded facts in gameplay (constellation descriptions, artifact tooltips, map lore) and made learning rewarding (earn HBAR for discoveries)

What we learned

Technical Skills:

Three.js mastery: Built 3 complex 3D environments from scratch Audio programming: Integrated AI-generated sounds with real-time gameplay Hedera blockchain: Learned smart contract interaction and wallet integration Performance optimization: Managed 150+ canvas objects at 60fps

Cultural Insights:

Dogon astronomy: Discovered their advanced knowledge of Sirius B centuries before Western science Ethiopian Orthodox traditions: Learned about Ge'ez liturgy and exorcism rituals Nigerian diversity: Explored how Yoruba, Igbo, Edo, and Hausa cultures differ yet coexist Maasai warrior culture: Studied adumu jumping dance and polyrhythmic war drums Game Design Philosophy:

Cultural games can be fun: Education doesn't have to be boring—wrap it in engaging gameplay Audio is 50% of horror: Great sound design makes or breaks spooky atmosphere Accessibility matters: 2-player mode makes games more inclusive and social Blockchain enhances, doesn't replace: HBAR rewards add value but gameplay comes first
