Inspiration

I come from Africa, though I didn't choose the continent I was born into, there is something I can do to make it better through technology, and in this case, Generative AI. Siloed initiatives by governments on the continent should be a thing of the past. We can't talk about the Africa 2063 Agenda, yet we keep on duplicating initiatives. We can't talk of AI Factories on the continent, yet we don't have a unified goal on how to accelerate AI adoption on the continent.

What it does

The African AI Strategies Portal is an interactive web platform that allows users to explore, analyze, and compare national AI strategies across African countries. It helps policymakers, researchers, and enthusiasts gain clear insights into how different nations are approaching AI development and policy.

How we built it

I built the portal individually using Amazon Q CLI to speed up development with AI-powered command line tools. The focus was on creating an intuitive interface and meaningful visualizations to make complex policy data accessible.

Challenges we ran into

Collecting consistent and comprehensive data from various African countries and structuring it for easy exploration was a major challenge. Ensuring the portal is both informative and user-friendly required careful design and iteration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m proud to have created a tool that makes national AI strategies accessible and comparable, highlighting Africa’s leadership in AI innovation and fostering greater understanding across the continent.

What we learned

This project taught me valuable lessons in data visualization, web interactivity, and clear communication of complex policy information. I also gained hands-on experience with Amazon Q CLI and deepened my appreciation for the strategic AI efforts happening across African countries.

What's next for Africa AI Strategies Portal

Next, I plan to expand the dataset with more countries and updated strategies, improve interactivity with advanced analytics, and seek partnerships to make the portal a key resource for AI policy insights in Africa.
