Inspiration

The project was inspired by the garbage undermanagement issue in Kenyan cities. Watching garbage trucks pass by half-empty bins while others overflowed onto the streets. We realized that African cities(Not only Kenyan) face a fundamental challenge: they're managing 21st-century urban problems with 20th-century tools. The inspiration struck when we saw how cab booking apps transformed transportation through real-time data and dynamic routing. The question now was, why the same principles were not used to essential city services?

While M-Pesa was revolutionizing banking, our waste collection, street lighting, and environmental monitoring systems remained stuck in the past. We envisioned a platform that would revolutionize infrastructure limitations in the same way, using affordable technology to create smarter, more responsive cities.

What it does

Afri-Smart Nexus is an integrated software platform that transforms urban management through four interconnected modules:

  1. Smart Waste Management: Our system uses sensor data and AI-powered route optimization to ensure garbage collection only happens when and where it's needed, reducing fuel costs by up to 40% and eliminating overflowing bins.

  2. Intelligent Streetlight Monitoring: Cities can remotely monitor, schedule, and maintain public lighting while engaging citizens to report faults for rewards, creating a community-driven maintenance network.

  3. Environmental Watch: We deploy affordable air and water quality sensors that provide real-time pollution mapping and source identification, turning guesswork into precise environmental protection.

  4. Data Analytics Hub: All modules feed into a central dashboard that generates automated climate reports, tracks cost savings, and provides actionable insights for city planners.

The platform serves households, small businesses, municipal governments, and environmental agencies through a unified interface that's accessible via web and later, mobile apps.

How we built it

Frontend is done in HTML, CSS and JS for web. A mobile app using React(expo) and Typescript is soon to come. Backend uses Node.js and Express.js for real-time features and Python/FastAPI for data-intensive processing, all connected through a GraphQL API gateway.

Database: MySQL,

Challenges we ran into

Real-time Data Synchronization: Managing simultaneous data streams from multiple sensor types while maintaining platform performance(avoiding overloading) was an issue.

User Experience Diversity: Creating interfaces that serve both technical city operators and casual citizen users took some time to come up with.

Scalability Planning: Architecting for future growth while working fast to deliver a functional MVP for the hackathon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a working integrated platform that demonstrates real-world problem-solving capabilities Designing a solution that addresses multiple Sustainable Development Goals simultaneously

Developing a citizen engagement model that turns residents into active city management partners

What we learned

Citizen engagement requires immediate, tangible benefits. Municipal workers need simple interfaces that don't require extensive retraining

The critical importance of cost-effectiveness in public sector technology adoption

What's next for Afri-Smart Nexus

Refine our algorithms based on pilot feedback and performance metrics Medium-term Vision: Implement machine learning capabilities for predictive maintenance and resource allocation Expand our module library to include traffic management, public transportation, and emergency response.
