Inspiration
I was inspired by how hard it can be for students and professionals to figure out what they need to improve in their profiles, find opportunities, or create strong applications. I wanted to create a tool that simplifies all of this in one place.
What it does
afoofa has four main features: Profile Comparator: Lets users compare their profiles to others who got into the same schools or programs to see what they need to improve. Opportunity Finder: Helps users find competitions, internships, and other opportunities based on their location, interests, and age. Resume Optimizer: Edits and improves resumes to match specific job or program requirements. Application Writer: Gives ideas and suggestions for answering application questions based on the user’s skills and experiences.
How we built it
I used Python to build the backend and added web scraping to gather information for opportunities. I also used open-source tools to optimize resumes and created algorithms for comparing profiles. The platform is designed in small parts so I can easily add more features later.
Challenges we ran into
Web scraping was tricky because websites have different layouts. Comparing user profiles with limited data was harder than I expected. Finding good tools for optimizing resumes that fit with my project. Making everything easy to use while still giving useful results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I created a working Profile Comparator that gives practical tips for improvement. The Opportunity Finder delivers relevant and useful results. I integrated a Resume Optimizer that works well and is simple to use. I built a solid foundation for more features in the future.
What we learned
Breaking a big idea into smaller parts makes it easier to work on. Web scraping and using third-party tools can save a lot of time but need careful handling. Simple designs and features can make a big impact if they solve real problems.
What's next for afoofa: all for one, one for all
Adding more types of opportunities and fields to the Opportunity Finder. Improving the Profile Comparator with better data and more specific tips. Making the Resume Optimizer smarter and more personalized. Revisiting the Application Writer to help create stronger and more creative answers. Designing a nicer and easier-to-use interface. Collaborating with schools, programs, and companies to provide verified opportunities.
