Inspiration
The recent devastating wildfires in California have indeed highlighted the critical importance of housing safety and affordability. AffordaHome addresses a pressing need by helping families and individuals find homes that are both within their budget and located in areas with lower wildfire risk. This innovative approach combines financial considerations with environmental safety factors, enabling users to make more informed housing decisions.
What it does
AffordaHome is a web application that provides personalized affordable housing options based on user input. Collects user information through a quiz, including income, credit score, and location preferences. Analyzes affordability using real-time property data from the Melissa API. Considers environmental factors, particularly wildfire risks, in its recommendations. Presents users with a curated list of housing options that balance affordability and safety.
How we built it
Frontend: React.js for the user interface, with components like AddressInput for user interaction4. Backend: Node.js with Express.js to handle API requests and serve data1. API Integration: Utilized the Melissa API for property data and address verification1. State Management: React's useState and useEffect hooks for managing component-level state2. Routing: Implemented to navigate between different pages like HeroPage, PropertyPage, and Dashboard2.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating and optimizing API calls to ensure fast and reliable data retrieval. Handling edge cases in address input and validation. Implementing a user-friendly interface that presents complex data in an easily digestible format. Ensuring the application's responsiveness and performance across different devices and network conditions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully integrating the Melissa API to fetch real-time property data. Creating a user-friendly interface for address input and property information display. Implementing a modular and scalable architecture using React components.
What we learned
Working with external APIs and handling asynchronous data flows in React. The complexities of real estate data and affordability calculations. The importance of user experience design in presenting complex information. Balancing multiple factors (affordability, safety, location) in housing recommendations.
What's next for AffordaHome
Expanding the environmental risk factors beyond wildfire risk to include other natural disasters. Implementing more advanced affordability algorithms that consider additional financial factors. Integrating machine learning to provide more personalized recommendations over time. Adding features for comparing multiple properties side-by-side. Developing mobile applications to increase accessibility and reach.
