Affectly 🧠💙
AI-Powered Mood Journal & Emotion Tracker
Inspiration
Mental health challenges like stress, anxiety, and burnout are increasingly common among students, yet access to professional support remains limited and expensive. I was inspired by the idea that self-awareness is often the first step toward healing. Journaling has always been a powerful tool, but without guidance, many people struggle to extract meaningful insights from their thoughts. Affectly was born from the desire to combine journaling with AI to help students better understand their emotions in a simple, accessible way.
What it does
Affectly is an AI-powered mood journal that allows users to write daily reflections and receive instant emotional insights. Using sentiment and emotion analysis, the app identifies emotional patterns, tracks mood trends over time, and presents them in an intuitive dashboard. Affectly offers a free tier for basic mood tracking and a premium tier that unlocks deeper emotional insights, advanced analytics, and unlimited entries.
How we built it
Affectly was built as a full-stack web application:
- The frontend was developed using Vite, React, and TypeScript for a fast and responsive user experience.
- Supabase handles authentication, database storage, and Edge Functions.
- Hugging Face AI models power sentiment and emotion analysis.
- Paystack was integrated to manage secure payments and subscriptions.
- The application is deployed on Vercel for reliable and scalable hosting.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was securely handling API keys and payments while keeping the app production-ready. Integrating AI models in a way that was both fast and cost-effective required careful planning. Another challenge was designing a system that clearly separates free and premium users while maintaining a smooth user experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully building and deploying a fully functional AI-powered mental health app.
- Implementing secure subscription payments with Paystack.
- Designing a clean, student-friendly interface focused on simplicity and clarity.
- Creating a meaningful product that addresses a real-world problem.
What we learned
This project deepened our understanding of full-stack development, secure payment integration, and AI-powered applications. We also learned the importance of user-centered design, especially when building tools related to mental health. Most importantly, we learned how technology can be used responsibly to support emotional well-being.
What's next for Affectly
Next, we plan to improve emotion detection accuracy, add personalized recommendations, and introduce long-term mental health insights. We also aim to partner with educational institutions to make Affectly available to more students and continue refining the platform based on user feedback.
