Inspiration

The inspiration was a script written by Sebastien Basset. A story set in 1939 Marseille, France, on the Eve of World War II. The epiphany was when Google announced Veo 3 and the ability to have AI characters speak dialogue. That was the inspiration that made us decide to try bringing this script to life.

What it does

It tells the story of an American Max Denholm and how he gets involved in international espionage. The movie uses most of the Film Noir tropes and was created entirely using AI tools

How we built it

I used Google Veo 3 and Gemini 2.5 flash for all the visuals, and ElevenLabs for all the narration Voice-overs as well as for revoicing characters. Music was a combination of Suno and ElevenLabs. I edited the movie with DaVinci Resolve. The graphic titles and logo were created with Adobe Photoshop.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenges initially were Character consistency as well as set design consistencies. Those issues became less of a nuisance as the project went on thanks to the introduction of Gemini 2.5 flash Nano Banana.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Completing a 21 minute narrative film is a huge undertaking, and we proved that with today's tools it is actually possible and will only get better with time.

What we learned

There are still plenty of hurdles to overcome with character, voice, and set consistencies but we are optimistic that those challenges are already being addressed

What's next for Affair in Marseille

Affair in Marseille already has two sequels, written by Sebastien Basset, ready for production. The film is now being submitted to AI Film Festivals for consideration.
