AETHERIS — The Last Archive of a Dying Universe

About the Project

AETHERIS is a cinematic 3D web experience that transforms the browser into a quiet journey through a living galaxy. Instead of presenting information through traditional pages and menus, the project invites users into a story-driven universe where light, motion, sound, and narration work together as one continuous experience.

The idea behind AETHERIS was to create something that felt less like a website and more like a short sci-fi film. We wanted the experience to feel emotional, immersive, and memorable — a place where every star feels like a memory and every transition feels intentional.

Inspiration

The project was inspired by cinematic science fiction, space imagery, and the idea that the web can be used for storytelling, not just information display. We were interested in building an experience that creates a feeling of wonder immediately, using only motion, atmosphere, and composition.

Instead of making another standard hackathon project, we wanted to explore how a browser could become a medium for calm, premium, and immersive storytelling. That led us to the core concept of AETHERIS: the last archive of a dying universe.

How We Built It

AETHERIS was built with modern web technologies focused on real-time 3D rendering and smooth interaction.

Tech Stack

  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Vite
  • Three.js
  • React Three Fiber
  • Drei
  • GSAP
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Vercel

We structured the experience into cinematic stages:

  • opening intro
  • title reveal
  • "Begin Journey" transition
  • procedural galaxy
  • narration and story moments
  • final fade-out

The goal was to keep the entire journey seamless, with no traditional page transitions. Every scene was tuned to feel like part of one continuous shot.

What We Learned

This project taught us that building an immersive experience is mostly about details.

Small choices — like camera speed, text timing, audio layering, and bloom intensity — changed the emotional impact of the whole project. We also learned a lot about balancing visual quality with performance, especially when working with real-time 3D particles and cinematic lighting in the browser.

AETHERIS also helped us improve our understanding of React Three Fiber, scene orchestration, and how to structure a creative project so it remains maintainable under a tight deadline.

Challenges We Faced

One of the biggest challenges was finding the right visual identity. We tried several different intro concepts before landing on one that felt right for the project. Because the deadline was short, we had to make decisions carefully and avoid overbuilding.

Another challenge was keeping the experience elegant while still making it feel impressive. It was important that the visuals did not become too busy or distracting. The final result needed to feel premium, readable, and cinematic.

Performance was also a major consideration. We wanted the experience to feel smooth and stable while still rendering a detailed galaxy and supporting atmospheric effects, narration, and transitions.

Future Improvements

AETHERIS is designed as a foundation that could grow into a larger experience. Future versions could include:

  • more narrative chapters
  • expanded cosmic environments
  • spatial audio
  • additional memory fragments
  • optional interactive exploration
  • WebXR support
