Inspiration

Modern multi-cloud architectures often face intermittent routing drops and protocol mismatch. We wanted to build AetherGate—a lightweight, resilient proxy mesh and health probe that ensures automated traffic diversion across disparate VPS nodes without central point of failure.

What it does

  • Dynamic Endpoint Probing: Continuously measures TCP/UDP handshake latency and packet integrity across multi-region nodes.
  • Failover Routing: Automatically reroutes traffic via healthy intermediate jump nodes when upstream packet loss exceeds thresholds.
  • Protocol Normalization: Translates proprietary telemetry payloads into unified metrics streams.
  • Local-First Security: Zero external secret storage with strict client-side encryption.

How we built it

Developed natively using Kiro CLI and steering contracts:

  1. Spec-Driven Design: Wrote deterministic API interfaces before implementing routing handlers.
  2. Automated Verification: Leveraged Kiro agent hooks to simulate regional network partitions and verify state recovery.
  3. Refactoring with Claude: Utilized Kiro's frontier models to optimize low-level network socket concurrency.

Challenges we ran into

Handling graceful failover under erratic packet loss without causing routing oscillations was tricky. Kiro helped us write robust exponential backoff logic and jitter algorithms.

What we learned

Building complex network tooling with Kiro's terminal-native agent significantly accelerates distributed systems development.

What's next for AetherGate

  • Native WireGuard mesh integration.
  • Hardware-assisted crypto acceleration support.
