Inspiration
Desktop personalization shouldn't require expensive software or consume unnecessary system resources. We wanted to build a free, open-source wallpaper engine that anyone could use, even on older or lower-end PCs. AeroPaper was inspired by the idea of making high-quality animated wallpapers accessible without subscriptions, heavy installations, or background bloat.
What it does
AeroPaper is a lightweight wallpaper engine that lets users customize their desktop with over 500+ prebuilt wallpapers while also supporting custom wallpapers. It is completely portable, requires no additional downloads, and runs from a single compressed package. Users can browse, switch, and manage wallpapers through a simple interface without relying on large background services.
How we built it
AeroPaper was built in Python with a focus on simplicity, portability, and performance. We designed an intuitive desktop interface, optimized wallpaper management, packaged all required resources into a single portable ZIP, and ensured the application remained lightweight while providing a rich wallpaper library.
Challenges we ran into
- Keeping the application lightweight while including hundreds of wallpapers.
- Packaging all assets into a portable distribution.
- Designing a clean and responsive user interface.
- Optimizing loading times and minimizing resource usage.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a completely free and open-source wallpaper engine.
- Created a lightweight package of approximately 100 MB.
- Included 500+ ready-to-use wallpapers.
- Eliminated complicated installation and unnecessary background services.
- Delivered a portable application that users can simply extract and run.
What we learned
This project taught us how to balance features with performance, optimize desktop applications for portability, improve UI design, organize larger projects, and package software for real-world users while maintaining a clean development workflow.
What's next for AeroPaper
- Community wallpaper marketplace.
- Wallpaper playlists and scheduling.
- Cross-platform support.
- Continued performance improvements while keeping AeroPaper lightweight and open source.
