Inspiration
AeonMarket was inspired by the Silk Road and its historical bartering systems and trust-based trade networks. Students already trade value every day—helping one another with coding, design, writing, and studying—yet these interactions often lack a structured system to recognize or reward them. By incorporating the core principles of traditional barter and accounting for the financial constraints of university students, we transform these informal exchanges into a trusted, AI-powered skill economy where time and reputation replace currency.
What it does
AeonMarket is a peer-to-peer skill exchange platform where users trade abilities like tutoring, coding help, and design support. AI-powered matching connects users based on skill compatibility, while a reputation system tracks reliability and quality. Over time, users build a “Skill Passport” that reflects their verified experience and contributions.
How we built it
We built AeonMarket using a full-stack architecture with a React + TypeScript frontend and a Node.js/Express backend. Firebase handles authentication and real-time data storage. We integrated LLM-based APIs for semantic skill matching and recommendations, and used Firestore for realtime.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was understanding system architecture and figuring out what features we needed to add. The idea generation process was one of the most difficult parts, but once we brainstormed and discussed ideas it was easy for us to begin creating it. Another difficulty was handling vague or inconsistent skill descriptions and translating them into meaningful AI embeddings for accurate matching.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built an end-to-end skill trading system with AI-driven matching, real-time trade workflows, and a functioning reputation model. We also designed a scalable architecture that can extend into blockchain verification and cross-campus networks.
What we learned
We learned how to design semantic AI systems, build trust-based scoring mechanisms, and structure real-time full-stack applications. We also gained insight into balancing technical complexity with user experience, especially in systems involving human trust.
What's next for AeonMarket
Next, we plan to improve AI matchmaking accuracy, expand the reputation system into a more robust “Skill Passport,” and introduce cross-campus networking. We also aim to add smarter dispute resolution tools, a resume generator from verified trades, and expand the platform beyond the student demographic.
