Inspiration

We realised that every time we sign up to a new service online, we have no idea what we are signing up for. No one reads the Terms of Service, or Privacy Policies, because they are designed for robots, not humans. This results in us signing away every ounce of information and privacy that we ever had, without realising that it has happened. These massive multi-million dollar corporations could be doing anything they want with our data, because we are the ones who told them they could. Enter, Aegis.

What it does

Aegis provides visibility into your entire history of accounts. It scans for services that you have registered for in the past, and finds the privacy policies that you agreed to. After finding these policies, it creates a helpful summary for you and compiles all the data you need to understand your privacy posture. You can also view our ratings of how bad the ToS are for specific companies, without having to read the entire thing yourself. The massive essays that were never written for humans is now parsed by cutting edge LLMs.

How we built it

We developed a frontend suitable to display the entirety of our data. The backend searches through your emails for the signup or verification emails you receive every time you register to something, and compiles the list of companies you have sold your soul to. We have a dataset of the ToS and Privacy Policies of over 9000 major companies, and use it to summarise them and provide rankings. The chrome extension we have built also shows you a disclaimer every time a Privacy Policy pops up on screen, and connects to your account on Aegis.

Challenges we ran into

Analyzing the dataset to provide rankings for all the ToS was complicated, especially because we were trying to fine tune an LLM specifically for this purpose. We had trouble deciding on one idea because we see this as an incredibly scalable products with potential for a multitude of features oriented towards taking control of your digital privacy.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of the extension that automatically pops up when a Privacy Policy is on screen, as well as our frontend design.

What we learned

It is not easy to fine tune an LLM, and Terms of Service agreements are usually much more problematic than one would think.

What's next for Aegis

We will continue to flesh out the features we started, and add more, so that Aegis can become a central location to view your privacy settings and manage these.
