Inspiration
Every family living with thalassemia will feel the pressure of time scrambling to arrange blood at the last minute, unsure whether help will arrive in time. Beyond that, they will face a constant fog of misinformation when trying to manage symptoms, side effects, or just day-to-day care.
We will keep hearing the same stories: anxiety, uncertainty, and burnout. And we will keep asking ourselves, what if no one had to go through this alone?
What if there was a way to combine the reach of AI with the empathy of a caregiver?
That question will give birth to Aegis—not just a health app, but a guardian. Aegis will step in when things get urgent and will stay with you to offer assurance. Whether it's finding a nearby donor, understanding lab results, or simply feeling seen and supported, Aegis will be built to be by your side.
What it will do
Aegis will be a multi-feature platform designed to help thalassemia patients and caregivers navigate both daily and emergency needs.
AI Health Assistant
A conversational AI will be trained on trusted medical sources to answer questions about thalassemia, transfusions, symptoms, and care.
Real-Time Donor Matching
It will use live location to instantly find and notify nearby eligible blood donors.
Predictive Blood Demand
It will forecast when and where blood will be needed using historical data, helping NGOs and hospitals plan ahead.
On-Device Privacy Mode
This will allow users to talk to the AI even offline, keeping sensitive data secure and on the device.
Behavioral Messaging
It will tailor donor outreach based on donation patterns, increasing the chances of a timely response.
How we will build it
While we haven’t built the full MVP yet, here’s how we will design it:
Frontend: React Native for seamless cross-platform mobile development.
Backend: Firebase and Node.js/Python to handle real-time data, user management, and messaging. Postgresql with postgis extension for geolocation based searching.
AI Stack: Gemini and Claude will be integrated through Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) for accurate, reliable responses.
Local AI: Lightweight on-device models like Gemma or DeepSeek will run via TensorFlow Lite for offline functionality.
Donor Mapping: Google Maps or Mapbox APIs will be used to locate, match, and notify nearby donors instantly.
Security: Encrypted LocalStorage and fallback logic will ensure data protection and app functionality even when offline.
Challenges we will run into
- Building a trustworthy medical knowledge base that filters out misinformation.
- Ensuring the offline AI model still delivers meaningful, accurate responses.
- Designing donor logic that avoids spam and prioritizes urgent cases.
- Balancing privacy with performance across cloud and device.
Accomplishments that we will be proud of
- Privacy will be built in, not bolted on.
- The system will support both daily guidance and emergency response.
- It will go beyond chatbots—delivering real-time, real-world tools.
- It will be designed with empathy, putting patients and families first.
What we will learn
- Accuracy will mean little without trust—users will need to feel safe.
- Offline support will not be a feature; it will be a necessity in many areas.
- Proactive care will beat reactive chaos—predicting needs will change everything.
- Technology won’t replace empathy, but it will amplify it.
What's next for Aegis: From Urgency to Assurance
MVP First, Fast We will build a fully functional MVP using React Native (for mobile) and Firebase (for backend and notifications). This will include live donor alerts and the AI assistant prototype.
Curate Medical Knowledge We will collect and structure over 500 trustworthy resources—research papers, clinical guides, FAQs—to power a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system for accurate responses.
Field-Test with Real Impact We will begin early testing with thalassemia support groups like Blood Warriors to validate features like donor mapping and emergency alerts in real-life scenarios.
Offline-First AI Experience We will launch a lightweight, on-device AI assistant that works without internet—ensuring data privacy and helping users in low-connectivity zones.
Compliance & Scale We will start preparing for DISHA and HIPAA compliance early so we are ready to scale the platform for hospitals, NGOs, and public use with complete trust.
Why Aegis Will Stand Out
Aegis won’t just be a health app—it will be a lifeline. While others track data, Aegis will deliver hope. It will be built with deep empathy for the real-life challenges faced by thalassemia patients and their families—from last-minute donor hunts to emotional burnout.
What will make Aegis different?
- Smart, AI-powered guidance—like having a medical expert in your pocket.
- Real-time donor coordination—no more frantic phone calls.
- Predictive planning—stay 3 steps ahead, not 3 hours late.
- It will work offline, with a privacy-first, zero-compromise approach.
In a world full of health tech, Aegis will connect hearts, not just devices. It won’t just be innovation—it will be impact.
