Inspiration

Most finance apps only tell you what already went wrong.
They show charts after the money is gone and expect users to “learn from mistakes.”

We wanted to flip that idea.

Aegis Finance was inspired by a simple question:
What if your money had a defense system that protected you before damage happens — and explained why?

Instead of passive analytics, we imagined a system that:

  • Understands user intent
  • Detects hidden risks and costs
  • Predicts future financial impact
  • Intervenes before harm occurs
  • Teaches users through action, not long reports

What it does

Aegis Finance is a real-time personal financial defense system.

It sits between the user and their money and actively:

  • Analyzes transactions before they happen
  • Detects hidden fees, taxes, and opportunity costs
  • Scores purchase risk in real time
  • Intervenes when a decision could cause future harm
  • Clearly explains why an action was taken

In practice, Aegis can:

  • Warn users before risky or impulsive purchases
  • Reveal the true cost of a transaction, not just the displayed price
  • Pause, cancel, or downgrade unused subscriptions automatically
  • Predict bill payment failures before penalties occur
  • Absorb financial shocks while protecting essentials
  • Build emergency reserves silently in the background

Users don’t just see data — they receive protection and guidance.

How we built it

We designed Aegis Finance as a layered decision system, not a traditional budgeting app.

Core architecture:

  • Frontend (Next.js + TypeScript):
Real-time alerts, cost breakdowns, simulations, and explanation panels.

  • Decision Engine (Python + FastAPI):
Handles intent verification, risk scoring, hidden cost detection, and rule evaluation.

  • Money Twin (Behavior Model):
Learns spending patterns to simulate future financial outcomes before purchases.

  • Rule & Intervention Engine:
Dynamically decides whether to approve, delay, optimize, or block transactions.

  • Explainability Layer:
Converts technical reasoning into simple, human-readable explanations.

  • Sandbox & Mock Financial Data:
Used to safely demonstrate real-world behavior without real money.

The entire system is modular, explainable, and operates in real time.

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing intervention vs user freedom
Too much blocking feels controlling; too little feels useless.

  • Making AI explainable
Risk scores alone weren’t enough — every action had to be justified clearly.

  • Avoiding analysis overload
Users want short, actionable insights, not financial textbooks.

  • Designing for prevention instead of reaction
Most finance tools are reactive by default; prevention required rethinking flows.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a real-time financial intervention system, not just analytics
  • Unified 15 novel financial protection concepts into one platform
  • Created a system that acts and explains, not just predicts
  • Designed a product suitable for daily real-world use

What we learned

  • Users trust systems that clearly explain their decisions
  • Prevention is more valuable than post-damage insights
  • Financial literacy improves faster through guided action
  • AI is most powerful when it supports human decisions, not replaces them

What's next for Aegis Finance

  • Browser and mobile integrations for real-world usage
  • Deeper personalization of the Money Twin
  • Expanded ethical and sustainability cost analysis
  • Secure open-banking integrations (with user consent)
  • Formal patent filing for the intervention architecture
  • Evolution into a personal financial operating system
