Inspiration

This summer, I have been extremely busy, whether that be studying for the SAT, my research program, or preparing for my junior year, I barely have any time for myself. Since time is so valuable and I still want to have fun, Aegis is my own calendar task tracker with its own fun, gaming element.

What it does

Aegis allows for the user to inputs tasks that they have to complete, keeping themselves organized and goal oriented. Upon completing the task, the user is awarded with ingame currency, that they can use in a clash-of-clans sort of game.

How we built it

Framework: Next.js (App Router), styled with Tailwind CSS for a sleek, glassmorphic dark UI. State & Motion: Zustand for lightweight global state (timers, tasks, game) and Framer Motion for smooth micro-animations. Gamification: A custom SVG game canvas where completing tasks visually builds and upgrades an isometric village. AI Wellness: Google Gemini & OpenAI API integrations that monitor student workloads and recommend timed breaks. Auth: Firebase Authentication (Google/Email) paired with a localStorage-backed Guest Mode fallback.

Challenges we ran into

Productive Gamification: Designing a village builder that rewards students without distracting them from actual work. Firebase Hydration: Fixing server-side rendering (SSR) errors when initializing Firebase during static Next.js builds on Vercel. Responsive Layouts: Ensuring the interactive SVG game map and multi-media slideshow scales perfectly across mobile and desktop.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Habit-Building Loop: Merging boring calendar scheduling with satisfying visual rewards (watching your village grow). Empathetic AI: Creating MindGuard—an AI check-in system that offers friendly, personalized advice instead of clinical warnings. Frictionless Onboarding: A robust guest login fallback that guarantees the application works immediately even if Firebase is offline.

What we learned

UI/UX for Wellness: Designing interfaces with high-contrast but soothing colors to minimize user cognitive load. Complex State Synchronization: Managing real-time data flows across interactive game screens, Pomodoro clocks, and AI feedback agents simultaneously.

What's next for Aegis

Cooperative Study Villages: Shared multiplayer spaces where groups of students build a town together by completing joint goals. External Integration: Two-way sync with Google Calendar, Notion, and Outlook to import tasks automatically. RPG Quests & Events: Focus streaks unlocking special structural upgrades and environmental events.
