Inspiration
Advocat. is inspired by gig economy apps that gave us ride sharing and fast food delivery. As a workers cooperative we have always had the dream of creating a general decentralised version of these platforms, borrowing inspiration from research in distributed ledgers and the semantic web.
What it does
Advocat. gives you the tools to manage volunteering work, the teams that do it, and both individual and organisational identity and authentication.
How I built it
We started building advocat. mid March in 2020 in response to G48 #hackthecrisis using a svelte/sapper template and PouchDB. There are 6 of us in the cooperative, 2 full time and 4 part time.
Challenges I ran into
Getting iOS to play nicely with PWAs.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Adding finer grained permissions to PouchDB and having a team learn svelte in a few days! ❤️
What I learned
PWAs are the future. Down with app stores.
What's next for Advocat.
We have entered the UK's #techforce19 challenge and we want to be useful to international groups. As a federated offering we are unique in the volunteering space and we hope this lends advocat. to bigger projects other platforms struggle to support.
