Inspiration

With the current state of the pandemic, many people have been laid off, and many youth are struggling to find new jobs. With Advisor, our aim is to help young adults manage their finances and create a budget that will help them invest and grow their money, while tracking expenses, and working towards their financial goals.

What it does

When users first sign up for Advisor, they are prompted to enter their current savings, expenses, and financial goals. Then, they are directed to a page where they can learn more about investing, savings and pension plans, or they can start building their budget. The budget creator allows them to manage their expenses and goals at any time. At the stocks page, users can browse various stocks and view their assets. The overview page displays a user’s total expenses and income for the month as a graph, and allows users to compare their spendings to the last 6 months.

How we built it

We used the webapp, Figma, to create our app. Figma had many features that made this process possible. Initially, we started off with a blank template. With Figma’s wide range of designing options, we were able to create a template for all our pages and features. After a basic design was made, the ‘prototype’ component allowed us to make this app interactable with the user, as it included swipe, tap and many other features.

Challenges we ran into

Having to do the entire project while not being able to converse with our group mates face to face served as the biggest challenge. Sometimes it was hard to reach others for input. This was also the first hackathon our group has done, so there was a lot of confusion. Also trying to make the app as realistic as possible for a general audience and coming up with all the tiny details to ensure this was as close to a real pitch as possible.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The amount of collaboration and teamwork that occurred over the last 24 hours was the best accomplishment we could have hoped for. We are proud of of how we worked together and came together with the design. We especially take pride in how our app looks. A lot of effort went into designing the application and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Overall, we all would say that this was a successful time and were proud of how far we came as a group.

What we learned

Since this was our first time using Figma, we were able to pick up a lot of new techniques when it came to building a new application from scratch. Implementing all the details and components to the app allowed us to learn more about the elements and principles of design such as composition and colour. We were also able to learn more about the technical components that many apps use. For instance, when you press a button, how can you make sure it leads to the page you want to open? All those details and components taught us a lot more about the effort and commitment needed to make an app.

What's next for Advisor

Advisor will hopefully be turned into a real IOS app one day. It will be transformed into an app lots of people can use.
