Inspiration
Since we all at some point switched our majors into a field that we were unfamiliar with, we wanted students like us to have a virtual advisor that would help them create multiple paths to ensure that students reach their career goal. Not only that, we were concerned about the large amount of college dropouts (being 3.9 million yearly) and the fact that a large amount of those dropouts were in thousands of dollars in debt with no college degree. With this, students would be able to foresee multiple career paths before choosing the right educational path for them.
What it does
This website creates personal career plans for people whether they are students or not. Moreover, in the plan, it would include advise on internships or jobs that a person should take that would increase a person's ability to get a job.
How I built it
We first created a rough flowchart of our storyboard on a whiteboard during the planning phase. After that, we delegated some tasks to each member pertaining to their skillsets. Then we collaborated together while also working individually on our task. Once all the individual portions were done, they were bridged together for the final project.
Challenges I ran into
Some features that we initially wanted were too complex and out of our scope of implementation due to our skillsets. We instead had to remove these features or had to simplify them down to concepts.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The background is a dynamically moving image that looks really pleasing. Accomplishing the rough idea in such a small timeframe was an achievement of its own. Furthermore, we are proud that we were able to create an idea that could potentially be used in the future that would help decrease dropout rates.
What I learned
I learned how to connect api’s together with my website. I implemented google’s google maps api to show the map on my website.
What's next for Advise Me
In the future, we would like to have a complete backend that would bring in data from previous alumni of university’s and we would use that data and recommend similar internships or extracurriculars to people who want the same position as them. We would also like to implement machine learning algorithms in order to simulate what a real advisor would give. Better UI/UX design for better user interface and friendliness.
