Inspiration
Plastic use consumption grows each year as we constantly use them in our daily lives. We carelessly throw them on the ground, not realizing what it can do to the environment. By incorporating the ocean-themed aspect and challenging game elements later into this game, we hope to not only make this game fun and educational for kids, but also interesting for adults as well. We want to encourage kids to understand the impact of their actions on their environment in an easy-to-understand way. It helps them to link the game over to real-life problems with plastic in the ocean.
What it does
This is a simple web-based game where you control Eddie the turtle to collect apples while avoiding plastic bags along the way. The more apples you collect, the harder the game becomes. When you hit a plastic bag, the game over screen comes on and shows randomly generated environmental educational facts for kids.
How we built it
We used Repl.it for the repositories of the game. We also used HTML, CSS, and Javascript for the actual code of the game, as well as using some helpful tutorials. The graphics were all hand-drawn, such as the background and the animation of all the sprites.
Challenges we ran into
As very beginner coders, we struggled with many aspects of building the game. During the process of the creation of the project, we had to learn many new concepts about the languages we used. This was very challenging, especially for the timeframe. We were extremely new to coding, as Selina had never coded an actual program before, so during the entire process, the learning and execution of the code was very difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Some of the accomplishments that we are proud of are being able to finish this project within the given timeframe and being able to make it enjoyable for kids. As well, we were able to learn alot about javascript and more about the capabilities of html and css, which will be very helpful for our future endeavors. With this short timeframe, we're proud of how we were able to learn so much and also create a decently fun game.
What we learned
We learned a lot over the process of this hackathon. Not only the majority of the code and the functionality of the languages we used, but also about teamwork and cooperation with another team member.
What's next for Adventures with Eddie
We plan to further develop and improve the game, including a character selection menu, an in-game shop, a leaderboard, many new levels and challenges to enhance a player's overall experience.
