š Game Description
- Title: Adventurer's Voyage: Memoirs of a Wanderer
- Genre: Narrative Pixel-Art RPG / Lite-Roguelike
- Core Concept: A hero caught in a daily loop of memory loss fighting to retain their identity using a Diary system. A metaphor for resilience and trauma recovery.
- Target Audience: Fans of narrative-driven indie games (like Undertale or Celeste), players who appreciate retro pixel art aesthetics, and anyone interested in gaming experiences that tackle mental health and resilience.
š® Gameplay Overview
The game follows a cycle of Exploration, Survival, and Reflection:
- Explore: Venture into a procedurally generated forest to fight enemies and gather resources.
- Survive: Manage your health and time. If you fall, the day resets.
- Record: Your items vanish, but your Diary remains. The game automatically logs your key actions.
- Repeat: Wake up in the hospital with no memory, read your past entries to understand who you are, and try to break the loop.
š¹ļø Core Mechanics & Controls
- Movement: Arrow Keys or WASD
- Interact / Attack: Spacebar
- UI (Shortcuts):
- I: Inventory
- J: Diary
- ESC: Close Window
- Also supports Mouse Click interactions.
Objectives & Conditions:
- Unique Feature: The Diary System tracks your narrative progress. Even after memory loss events, the written words remain as your anchor.
- Objective: Survive the procedural forest by managing your hearts (eat Potatoes to heal). Reach the cliff edge to trigger the story transition to Day 2.
- Loss Condition (Game Over): If Health reaches 0 (due to enemy attacks), the character dies permanently. The save is wiped, and you must start a New Game.
- Narrative Reset (The Cliff): Falling off the cliff is a key story event. You wake up in the hospital (Day 2) with memory loss and an empty inventory. You must return to the forest to find your Lost Bag and retrieve your items.
š” Inspiration
I wanted to create a game that isn't just about fighting monsters, but about the internal fight against forgetting. The theme explores resilience: how do you move forward when every day resets your progress? This is a metaphor for trauma recovery and the struggle to hold onto one's identity.
This game tackles the concept of mental resilience. By simulating memory loss, it builds empathy for those struggling with cognitive conditions or trauma, showing that even when everything is lost, the will to rebuild defines who we are.
āļø How I built it & Technical Details
- Engine: Phaser 3 (JavaScript/ES6+)
- Build Tool: Vite
- Level Design: Tiled (for the Town) + Custom Procedural Generation Algorithm (for the Forest).
- Mechanics: Custom systems for Inventory persistence (partial) and the Diary logic.
- Platform: Web Browser (Playable instantly on Windows, Mac, Linux).
- System Requirements: A modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) with hardware acceleration enabled. No download required.
š® What it does
Adventurer's Voyage is a pixel-art RPG with a unique twist:
- The Loop: Every in-game day, the protagonist wakes up in a hospital with no items and no memory of the previous day.
- The Anchor: The only thing that persists is your Diary. You must write entries (automatically generated based on actions) to leave clues for your future self.
- Procedural World: The forest changes every day, symbolizing the chaotic nature of a confused mind.
š§ Challenges I ran into
Balancing the "frustration" of losing items with the "hope" of progress was hard. I had to design the Diary System so it feels rewarding enough to make the player want to try again, despite the daily reset.
š Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- Narrative Mechanics: The way the gameplay (losing items) reinforces the story (losing memory).
- Atmosphere: The combination of pixel art and the procedural forest creates a sense of being lost yet determined.
- Impact: Creating a game that resonates with anyone who has ever had to rebuild themselves from scratch.

š What's next for Adventurer's Voyage
- Complete the Narrative: Currently, the game covers the first 2 days (Prologue & Recovery). The full script spans 17 in-game days, and my main goal is to implement the rest of this journey.
- Deeper Diary: Allowing players to write their own custom notes.
- Mobile Port: Making the story accessible on phones.
