Inspiration

Growing up in a small town, I was able to connect with many local businesses and I know the importance of tourism in a growing economy. Although Palm Coast is growing rapidly, I feel as if many people often pass the town by as they drive to their main destination. I feel that many small towns suffer this fate and could benefit from an application that plans out your day in a city of your choosing...

What it does

Adventour is a web application that takes the geolocation of the user and provides them with a full itinerary for the day. From shopping, to attractions, to local cuisine, Adventour has an unique experience for everyone. Users can choose to filter their itinerary by distance from a location, prices and interests. Adventour can plan out an extravagant evening or a casual day to a new destination.

How we built it

Adventour is built with ReactJS and utilizes the Google Maps and Google Places API to get a users current location or another destination to plan an itinerary. We are currently hosting the Adventour site on Netlify.

Challenges we ran into

A major roadblock for this project was finding businesses and activities around a particular location of their choosing. Everyone on the team is fairly new to ReactJS so there was definitely a learning curve but we all pushed through and were able to reach a solution.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overall, we are all proud that we were able to make a reasonable making web application without any frontend developers on the team. Although we all had ambitious goals for this project, we recognized limitations both in the time we had and our experience level and were satisfied with the progress we were able to make.

What we learned

As previously mentioned, we were all new to ReactJS so this was a great learning opportunity and an insight to how tedious web development can be. Wanyea Barbel learned about scalability and how important it is to understand how much you can accomplish in a given time frame as well as integrating APIs into web applications. Thalia learned how to use Git/Github and the importance of version control as well as syntactical elements of JavaScript. Dahlia also learned about APIs and how hooks work in ReactJS.

What's next for Adventour

Moving forward, we would like to continue development on the project because the time allocated for this Hackathon alone would not do the project justice and we believe in can be much better. Additionally, we are committed to creating a platform that not only provides users with a cost-efficient way to plan and experience life but also brings underrepresented businesses into the foreground.
