Inspiration

With the escalating urgency of climate change and the growing awareness of our daily carbon footprint, we were driven to create the Advanced Green Transit Tracker. Our goal is to empower individuals to make environmentally conscious commuting choices by providing them with actionable insights into their travel's environmental impact. We believe that small, informed decisions collectively contribute to a significant positive change for our planet.

What it does

The Advanced Green Transit Tracker allows users to plan their journeys by selecting the mode of transportation and entering the distance and weather conditions. It then provides real-time insights into the environmental impact of their journey, including CO2 emissions and suggestions for offsetting their carbon footprint. Users can track their progress towards sustainability goals and view analytics of their recent journeys.

How we built it

We built the frontend using modern web development frameworks such as React for dynamic user interfaces and CSS for styling. The backend, which handles the calculations and data storage, was developed with Node.js and Express. We also integrated APIs to fetch real-time weather data and used a carbon emission database for accurate impact assessments.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges was accurately calculating the CO2 emissions for different modes of transportation and ensuring the data was reliable. We also faced difficulties in optimizing the user experience to make the app intuitive and engaging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of successfully developing a user-friendly interface that provides complex data in an easily understandable format. Additionally, integrating real-time data and ensuring the accuracy of our CO2 calculations were major accomplishments.

What we learned

We learned a lot about environmental metrics and the complexities of calculating carbon footprints. Additionally, we enhanced our skills in frontend and backend development, as well as working collaboratively to solve challenging problems.

What's next for Advanced Green Transit Tracker

In the future, we plan to expand the app's capabilities by adding more detailed analytics, support for additional modes of transportation, and gamification elements to encourage users to reduce their carbon footprint. We also aim to partner with local governments and organizations to promote the app and enhance its impact on sustainable commuting.
