This guide was born out of real-world headaches and “there has to be a better way” moments. I’ve worked with teams who felt lost in a sea of templates, and I’ve been the one untangling scripts at 2am. The official docs are a great start, but let’s be honest—sometimes you need advice from someone who’s been in the trenches.

https://github.com/MHCPPrograms/worlds-documentation/pull/53

I dove into platform docs, community stories, and my own late-night troubleshooting sessions to pull together the tips I wish I’d had from day one. My goal? To help you skip the frustration and get straight to the good stuff: smooth collaboration, fewer headaches, and more time for the fun parts of world-building.

What I learned:

  • Naming conventions and a tidy asset library are lifesavers (future you will thank you)
  • Update debt is real—have a plan, and don’t be afraid to refactor
  • Decoupling logic with manager scripts and events keeps things flexible and future-proof
  • A little process discipline goes a long way, especially when you’re working with others

How I built it:

  • I pulled together official docs, community wisdom, and plenty of hands-on trial and error
  • I tested everything in the Desktop Editor and with file-backed scripts—so you don’t have to hit every bump in the road
  • I leaned on tools like VS Code and Context 7 MCP server to make scripting less painful (highly recommend!)

Challenges:

  • Wrestling with “deep copy” script behavior (it’s a wild ride, but you can tame it)
  • Keeping everyone on the same page when scripts and worlds are changing fast
  • Figuring out how to document fixes so the next person (or future me) doesn’t get stuck

Accomplishments:

  • Made a guide that’s actually useful for teams (not just theory)
  • Shared patterns and troubleshooting tricks that saved me hours
  • Shined a light on new tools and APIs that make life easier

Next Steps:

  • Add more real-world stories and visuals (because examples make everything clearer)
  • Keep this guide fresh as the platform grows and new best practices pop up
