Inspiration

I used to volunteer at HSHV, a local animal shelter in Ann Arbor, and know how important it is for adopters to find the right pet match for their lifestyle. I wanted to make it easier for people to find the pet that's genuinely right for them.

What it does

Ann Arbor pet adopters create a quick profile (living situation, activity level, etc.) and Pet Match uses AI to pair them with the HSHV pets that best fit for their lifestyle. From there, they can go right to HSHV's website to learn more about how to meet the pet, adopt the pet, and more.

How we built it

I exclusively used JacHammer to build the MVP, and Baz for AI code review. The prototype pulls live pet information already published on hshv.org and runs it through an AI matching model that scores each animal against the adopter's profile.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was getting the data. HSHV doesn't have a public API or data feed yet, so I had to work from the pet information already listed on their public site and figure out how to keep it structured and current.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building and shipping a working MVP at my very first hackathon! Going from an idea rooted in my volunteer days to something clickable and real is something I'm genuinely proud of.

What we learned

I learned a whole new programming language over the course of this build, and learned a lot about turning a scrappy idea into a functioning prototype under time pressure.

What's next for Adoptable Pet Match

Pitch it at JacHacks, then take it to HSHV directly to help more Ann Arbor adopters find their perfect match!
